Outside the Lines/Barkley says Auburn didn't hire gill because he was black (merged)

I think Barkley is 100% correct.
ok, bad hire, poor decision........call it settling.......all agree with.....

but you really think this was a race driven decision? that they simply eliminate the idea of a black head coach because of race all together?

i mean i'm not naive enough to think that it can't happen.......but really?

I believe if TG was white they would have offered him the job. It is simply an opinion.

From what I have heard the money man at Auburn was pretty high on him. Doesn't mean that TG got the shaft because he wasn't white though, it's just what I've heard.

I'll agree that it was a bad hire based on records alone, but I'll submit this question though, all things considered, do you really think a major university in Alabama would hire a black hfc? Im not so sure Barkley didnt get it right. Even if he is a blabermouth sometimes.

all i know is that i can't imagine trying to recruit down there right now. true or not, the fact that it's being stated this blatently will make some people raise the eyebrow, true or not.

this will be an interesting situation to follow.

Auburn may not have selected an african-american, but they did select a man of Ukrainian descent. I, for one, think they should be commended. Pozdorovlyayemo!

Auburn hired somebody they can fire immediately and throw under the bus at any time without fear of pissing anybody off.
I also think so. The coach Auburn wants is not on the shelf right now, yet they need to make some kind of move till coach Right comes along. With Chizik when the time is right they can dump him cheaply (not talkin about money) and make their dream hire.

I have a tough time imagining a school spending $6 million to fire its coach, in order to turn around and hire a guy, whom they also plan on firing and buying out, in order to ultimately hire their ideal coach.

I just don't think that was the plan at all.

I heard Gill turned it down too. (not from a reliable source, unless you count radio guys)

Whatever the reason, it is a very stupid move. It is an odd hire, but no one on any side has any evidence. This is certain to hurt Auburn's recruiting. Just the rumors that they won't give a black man a chance will damage their reputation with recruits. Hopefully commentators keep on topic and don't try to drag UT into this mess.

From all indications no. ESPN is now saying coaches around the SEC are claiming it is because Gill's wife is white. While race may have played a hand in this on some level, I think that's stretching it a bit far. What is crazy about the whole thing is how even Auburn fans hate the hire. Chizik is on an extremely short leash if you ask me.

Were they those sources unnamed? Also maybe that's why Chuck is so upset isn't his wife the same. By the way What difference does it make?

What reasons did Auburn have to hire Chizik over Gill?

Some dude on Outside the Lines just called this the worst hire in CFB since Gerry Faust at Notre Dame.

IMO it's going to be at least another five years, now, until Auburn will beat Alabama and win the SEC West. That's assuming Saban stays at Bama.

Same thing I said in the thread in Around the NCAA. I won't say racism was the reason behind Auburn hiring Chizik, but I sure as hell can't think of any other single reason as to why they wouldn't have picked up Gill.

I, in no way, think that this was a good hire for Auburn. I do think, though, that people are overreacting a bit. Chizik will probably win more games next year at Auburn than he did in both of this first two seasons at Iowa State combined.

Further, as much as I like Turner Gill, I don't think he'd have been an upgrade over Tuberville either. He's a fine coach, but I suspect he'd have been chewed up and spit out in the current SEC West.

Auburn's just in a tough spot right now. You can't lure a more attractive candidate than Saban to a job that's less attractive than Alabama.
