Overall hype of the '14 class

Don't expect too much to soon, my two cents!

I remember the 05 and 07 class and thinking both were going to unseat Urban Meyer.
I even thought the 09 class was spectacular. All three had more 5 stars in them than this.
So I am excited but am going to be patient and hope this class fares better.

your post contradicted your own stance about performance last year. If it takes a few years as you say, why do you have difficulty understanding the performance last year? We just had more highly ranked players recruited in one class than we have in the PAST 6 YEARS combined. If you don't think we had inferior talent, speed and depth you have lost touch with the game and are in your own fantasy.
And life is just a fantasy, can you live the fantasy life?

That's at least understandable. Why they would even bring up ND , Oklahoma and Stanford's classes is a bit mystifying. Never mind Kentucky and ...oh is that Tennessee with a top 5 class? blah lets talk about USC blasting through at number 10 ! At the end of the day the rank doesn't mean squat. Let's see the rubber hit the road and forget the fancy mufflers.

ESPNU made us the star of the show yesterday. I recorded 7 hours & watched last night (FF through the useless bummer, ND, SC etc garbage) Jeannine Edwards was on campus & they went to her no less than 10 times, all of it being PRO Vol. I even read someone complaining on twitter how it was just "The Tennessee Show." 'Bout time we had coverage like this for UT!!

Exactly!

We won't know how well this class will perform until they hit the field.

Because we lost all of the starting OL and DL

When you do that, you are essentially starting over

I have concerns at LT and RT. Our DL absolutely sucked, so I'm not worried about their departure. If we had dominant lines, I would be, but our DL wouldn't have been in 3 deep on most teams and a couple of the young guys are already better before they step foot on campus.

I get where you're trying to go with this.

I do.

But the 2005 class had 17 total 4/5*

2007 had 16 total.

The classes before and after?

2004: 10

2006: 5

2008: 4

That's where the question starts answering itself. We got our "star power" but we didn't get depth and we didn't get depth/talent at critical positions... namely OL/DL.

2015 has to be a great follow-up class which it already looks like it is going to be. That's where those 2005/2007 megaclasses failed. They were surrounded by bad recruiting classes.

2015 already has 4 4* players in it so 2015 is well ahead of schedule compared to 2006/2008.

This is true. But the one thing that has stood out to me about this class compared to previous years is the overall togetherness, excitement, and determination of the group. I don't think it is necessarily their skills (although they are rated highly) that will make this class special... I think it will be their attitude and work ethic.

Physically speaking, you can accomplish a lot with an extra 5 months of preparation. And with 14 EE's already putting in work, this class has more upside potential than any other to make a strong, immediate impact on the field this year.

You know this class is close due to primarily social media, the other classes could have been just as close. Twitter wasnt exactly what it is now.

Shhh

Don't ruin their party

Reality will hit again come fall

We are still several years out from competing for any title

Jones needs to build on the momentum and make a bowl. If not, the ability for other staffs to negative recruit against him will get easier.

You can't continue to promise results and not show any

I remember when I used to think you where a good poster but for the last few months you have wallowed in negativity like a pig in a sty.
It has become impossible for you to post anything positive at all.

I believe landing a top 5 recruiting class is showing plenty of results.

Just had a Gamecock fan here in my office come over and give big props to Butch Jones and company on the recruiting. He said he knew the Vols would be back soon and he is not ready for it to happen yet. Too bad - we coming. GO VOLS!!!!

I think a true example of the type of young men we are dealing with is the Berry twins and their number choice: 1 wanted to wear 41 to pay family respect and the other 29 to pay respect to Inky. These young men understand what Tennessee football is...not just a program, but a way of life. This is exactly the type of attitude we need and many of these guys have it.

They have Their heads up Nick Satan's arse:blink:

Bama's class is 5-star heavy. Insane how kids keep going there with the level of talent already on the roster. And yet every year Saban plays a few freshman. Butch has a long way to go before the roster is solid across the board. This class is first step. Now they better start coaching them up.

In fairness to CV I think he means "on the field" results. Now, having said that, bringing in top level talent can certainly help facilitate that happening.

Now stand back and watch which and how many leave.
Wouldn't surprise me -if they can get away with leaving without restrictions- end up coming to us.

I expect results from this class in 2014. We saw a lot of top notch freshmen contributing in 2013 and many of those teams were more loaded than UT. The fact that our Vols were so depleted talent-wise last year, these freshmen will be expected to play and contribute right away.

I understand how CBJ wants to take the pressure off these kids but this day and age of guys leaving early, freshmen almost have to produce

Well, this class is definitely the best we have had in years and that does give some immediate satisfaction. In todays world, however, people expect immediate results from something like this. I, as much as any true Vol fan, want to be back to where we were in the mid 90's through the early 2000's. Going into each game with the unwavering confidence that we had a big chance to win and expecting the same. The problem with that is we are just starting to restock an empty store. If our fans can be a little bit patient and understand this concept, we will be fine. Of course, Butch and Co. will need to duplicate this success for a couple of more years before we will be anywhere close to where we need to be. People need to face the fact that one top 5 recruiting class following several dismal ones will not be able to compete(at least not consistently) with teams that have 3 or 4 top 10 signing classes in the last four years. With some great coaching, a lot of heart, and a little bit of luck, we should, however, be able to compete with some of the teams on our schedule that we have been losing to. Everyone just needs to remember as long as we are seeing some constant improvement and lots of effort consistently from these players, we have made a tiny step in the right direction.

IMO, this is the deepest and most complete class we've had in a long time. It met a lot of needs and will pay dividends in the not so distant future. Not only has Butch recruited elite talent but also talented recruits that have character. 2 for 1 special. Another recruiting class like this and UT will be set to compete for championships.

Count, it's ok to be happy about this amazing class. I always enjoy your posts but what is up with you lately. Cheer up!

I'm glad you colored that orange, because the only way that scenario could even possibly play out would require looking at it through orange-tinted glasses.

If being a great recruiter was all it took, Ron Zook would be a Hall of Fame coach

I love the togetherness of this class, that bond will serve them well, but be careful with over projections for the coming season. Just enjoy the ride.

Agreed. There's no question that the class has talent and a great deal of potential. The drive and winning spirit/attitude will go a long way to correct what happened to the guys under Dooley.

But, they're young and it will be a process. As long as we understand that, and enjoy watching them grow as players, it will be a fun few years. We need to be winning A LOT of games I'm 2016 IMO.

I'll give you that for sure, but other classes didn't have 14 EE's or as much in-state talent either.

I'd also point out that this class wasn't thrown together at the last second... alot of these guys have been committed for a long time, giving them a better chance to get to know one another.
