Just saw this and hadn’t heard anything.
This is shocking, do they know the cause?
At first when I saw a picture, I thought it was an old photo of the Oklahoma City bombing.

The building was built in the 80's. Wonder when the last inspection was done.

I bet they find a sinkhole is the root cause. Who knows, Miami has incredibly stringent building codes now but they didn't in the 80s.

I was thinking the same thing.

Sink hole not out of question, but heard one report that said possible foundation issues. That whole barrier island has plenty of bedrock. The sand beaches are manmade.

I gotta wonder, what sort of bedrock was it built on? If it's limestone like they have further north in FL, water movement underground could've undermined part of the foundation over the past 40ish years or so. The center section that collapsed first appears to be part of a taller building mass, where the elevator core was located. That part went first, and then the eastern/beachside mass collapsed inward on top of it. My guess is undermined foundation, whether it's from a sinkhole or underground stream (not knowing Miami very well...could it even be a busted stormwater pipe that contributed?).

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often with how many buildings are constructed on reclaimed wetlands.

So the building was undergoing a 40 year engineering recertification when this happened. Cracks were found (apparently minor and already repaired) while a new massive building was going up beside it. Some people thinking that maybe the construction of the new building destabilized this one.

Didn’t even think that was possible.

A small building got rocked in Dania Beach when construction crews were digging a trench for a new hotel. Nothing on this scale but they did blame it on the site prep for the new hotel.

It's near to or more than half the building. That's a majority, not partial.

99 missing as of latest news I saw

Unreal video.

Odd the way it went down, from the center of the original section the the right section was from the bottom up after the first section was down. Will be interesting what new codes come out as a result. I thought by 1980 Hurricane proofing was already in place so that loss of part didn't have catastrophic results for the rest.
