Why? They held Bama to 6 points and SC to 16. Our offense should have been able to cover that..

the bottom line is all the games last year could have been won if the defense would have had a shutout. Its easy to go look on the other side of the ball and blame the offense, but they should have focused on what they could have done to be better. Easier said then done.

The defense front 7 played very well, but the secondary could have been better. They gave up a lot of points to ND, Vandy, and GA. That said, that was as good a defensive unit, as John Chavis has ever had.

Last year's defense couldn't carry the '98 D's bags.

They are on par to each other

Defensive Line

05D > 98D

Linebackers

98D > 05D; but very close

Secondary

98D > 05D

I'll take Shaun Ellis and Darwin Walker over anybody on this year's defensive line. Jesse Mahaloena is the most overrated player at UT since Wil Overrated, er Overstreet.

There's also not a linebacker on this team that would have started for the '98 team.

UT last year was the no. 2 rushing defense in the country, and that with an offense that left them on the field most of the game. I think 05's defensive line was better.

Yes.I agree OWB. Bama scoring 6.No way no how can that game be blamed on the defense. The SC game was a toss up.

The defense had the South Carolina game firmly in their hands. They failed to make plays. It's that simple.

That was the d backs fault not d line if memory serves me correctly. That SC receiver was awesome, I do remember that.

Is the defense not a unit? Are we segmenting blame by position? I didn't see the line contributing any sacks on those late drives.

Yes they allowed a long drive at the end of the game, but they also spent the entire 3rd quarter holding SC inside their own 10. I think we started 4 drives in SC territory in the 2nd half and ended up with 3 points. Tough to criticize the D too much for any of the losses last year. They were hung out to dry a lot.

We were talking about the d line initially.Yes, we do play as a unit. The receiver was good though and I think he will be back for a few more years.I can't recall his name.

How were they hung out against Vanderbilt?

Keep in mind that a lot of those points against ND and GA came due to punt and INT returns.

That's the one time when I can't argue with you. There was no excuse for that.

Wasnt Cutler running those drives..? Maybe he is a better qb than leinhart?
How many of Vandy's O-Linemen are going to the NFL? I don't think Cutler was the one blocking our vaunted D-Line.

The poor play of the defense against Vandy can probably be attributed to a giant loss of morale due to the fact that the D could hold a team to 6 points and still lose. Yeah, they stunk it up against Vandy, but I am more surprised that they didn't give up the ghost sooner.

Thank God they didn't, or it could have gotten really ugly.

Personally, good luck to all the Vol's in the Draft. But they ALL were overrated last year. Pre season #2-3 then look where they finished.
true...it seems that jason allen is the onyl good nfl talent that we are putting in to the years crop...mahalona proved to be a bust...all of kevin simons injuries over the years have caught up to him...and we all know that riggs isnt gonna do anything with his pedestrian speed and poor vision

Geez freaking louise. I think our defense could have shut out opponents and people would still not be pleased. Yeah, big plays happen when our defense has been on the field like 80% of the game. The big pass by Bama was by their go-to guy DJ Hall, who was being covered by Antonio Gaines. Gaines is like a 19th stringer, that shouldn't have been on the field. However, most of our starting secondary was probably on the sideline plugged up to IVs due to exhaustion. So quit blaming it on the D.

Why? Were they out of shape? When they went on the field for Alabama's last drive, the time of possession was essentially even. 80% of the time? That's a joke. The Florida game was the only game that time of possession was really lopsided, and that had as much to do with their inability to stop third and long as it did any offensive maladies.

THey were obviously in better shape than LSU's team. How many of those guys had cramps when we played them in the swamp? I didn't see any of our guys lying on the field. Yes, you are correct, they weren't on the field 80% of the time. I was joking! It's called being facetious. That doesn't change the fact that week in and week out, our offense couldn't drive, and couldn't give our defense any rest. There was no exception with Alabama. We played well on defense and kept them out of the end zone.

As for the Florida game, our defense controlled them well. Had it not been for our ridiculously horrible special teams we would have won that game. The offense wasn't exactly stellar either. The bad play of everything but our defense is what helped Urban Meyer win his first SEC game. However, you might recall that our defensive play led most commentators to question the potency of Meyer's offense in the SEC.
