Pat Summitt: the second greatest coach in women's hoops history

I don't doubt that UT's attendance will be larger than UConn's by the end of the year. That's as much a factor of arena size and cheap seats as anything else. The real point is that UT's attendance numbers are almost in free fall. Home attendance has dropped roughly 40% in the last 10 years, 30% just since Coach Summitt retired.

Other than revenue, I'm not sure that "winning
attendance" means anything.

Fans want be back until Holly Warlick is gone and expect we may go down even more. I even think it will be a positive as she is never going to be able to maintain the Lady Vol program at the level it was before and I believe there are coaches that can we just need to let her go and make a commitment to one of them.
I think it will eventually happen as attendance gets it the 8000 range or lower. I welcome it Holly needs to go Lady Vol fans deserve better.

That might be a big if this year.

I really hoped that Holly could take over and maintain the program both in recruiting and on the floor performance and she has really done neither. I know she has won 92 games but she isn't doing that well against the actual competition.
She is 0 for Notre Dame
1 and 2 versus Stanford
0 and 2 versus Maryland
Think we lost a couple to Baylor

So not so good against team we used to beat like a drum.

It is rather ridiculous to think that Tennessee, or any program, could dominate the women's game forever the way Summitt's teams did during her prime. But we have to acknowledge that UConn has had a far more successful run the past 20 years than UT ever did and it shows no signs of slowing down. This is even more impressive when one considers that Summitt dominated when the women's game was underfunded and quality teams were very rare. Auriemma is dominating the game when it is filled with talented players and teams. What's more, UConn is not the only team to outshine UT the past decade or so. We are not even a distant third when one considers the likes of ND, SC, Baylor and Duke. Hell, UT is not even the best in their conference and hasn't been for a while.

My point is that we should still be proud of the Lady Vols because they are a top-25 team and usually a top-10 team. Most teams still fear us and a win over the Vols is a signpost for opposing programs. But deep tourney runs are not to be expected any longer and we should stop comparing the current team's success to the success of past UT teams, especially those from the Summitt era. Instead, we need to focus on comparing our team to our next opponent and just take care of business.

So let's be proud of our history and give Coach Summitt her dues. Her place in the pantheon of women's basketball is secured, although when the dust settles, she will not be viewed as the best ever; she will be viewed as the groundbreaker without whom none of what we see today would have been possible.

This screams to me I am a 20 year old that knows nothing about basketball and less about the sport PAT developed.... Without Pat there would be no geno.... she created everything for him..

just stupid

Pat hand picked Holly to be her successor. UT honored Pat's wishes. We are now on year 4 and it's not working. It's time to do what's best for the Lady Vols.

This screams to me, "I have low reading comprehension skills."

Read my last sentence again, please. And for the record, I can bet that I was watching UT Lady Vols basketball before you were a glint in your daddy's eye.

The point is, Summitt is the one to whom all of women's basketball is indebted, but her statistical dominance has been eclipsed by Auriemma. UConn has a winning record against UT, more winning streaks, more IMPRESSIVE winning streaks, and a dominance over opponents that is jaw-dropping. They don't win by 10 points; they win by 30 points. Consistently. And this has been the pattern for over two decades. We love Pat and she will be seen as the greatest for many reasons. She is and always will be the spiritual epicenter of lady's bball...perhaps all of lady's sports. But in my opinion, Auriemma's on-court performance in so many aspects is more impressive.

Another generation will pass before we see the likes of Summitt or Auriemma in the women's game. It is highly unlikely that the next one will emerge at Tennessee. We can get rid of Warlick and look for the next messiah, but I doubt we will find him/her. Until Auremma leaves or declines, we will remain in the middle of the pack of also-rans that trail UConn at a distance every year.
