Here's another screwed up fact for the mix:

Despite how much lower (vastly lower) men's basketball attendance has been for many years, the ticket prices for men's hoops have always been and still remains much higher.

IOW, the redneck mentality is so deeply entrenched in Vol-Land, that even though the women were regularly selling out the venue or close to it, and even though the men were regularly barely generating enough attendance to cover the costs of turning on the lights, it was decided (against all logic and economic reason) that the men's prices should remain higher than the women's.

Additional fact: Until this year, women's hoops have been bringing in more money than men's hoops for about a decade. It hasn't been close. The Lady Vols have been blue chips. The Vols have, fairly often, been cow chips, and it's been reflected in attendance, etc.

PPS- We now know that UT are cheapskates when it comes to everybody below Head Coach in football. As part of this thread, I've got to wonder how our hoops and other sports salaries compare- especially considering Summitt is roundly, nationally, considered one of the greatest figures in collegiate sports history by the sports professional (if not necessarily the professional dick-bearing lower primates)...?

Memphis, I am sorry but this is just not true. For many seasons they have given away Lady Vols tickets (which I think is fine) for free. And you do realize the average season attendance for lady vols games is usually around 10,000?

"Additional fact: Until this year, women's hoops have been bringing in more money than men's hoops for about a decade. It hasn't been close." <<---That's just a flat out crazy statement.

How could they not, Freak? The women's attendance is always higher than the men's.

That's not true either. The women only average about 10,000 per game.

I don't know what the numbers are, but I'd think the difference in the amount of money brought in by the TV contract (as well as radio dollars) would tip the scales dramatically toward the men.

I still don't understand why it really matters. They are both basketball teams for the Big Orange. Can't we just like them both and share the money?

Well blow me down. I thought they had a lot more of a crowd than that.

I agree, but Title IX is a seriously sore subject for many.

Naw... I was just proud of LIO for noting the shameful inequity of the distribution of wealth in NCAA sports and applauding her obvious feeling that it's pretty stupid to that sports coaches get paid so much.

I mean, sure, the players are getting screwed money-wise, AND, sure, women are getting screwed more than men ( what do you expect from homophobes?).

LIO just ragged on the idea that anybody- any coach- got paid $1 million for being a PE teacher. And I was just agreeing.

The fact that she's obviously a commie is beside the point.

Yeah, but I would think that the rights fees are a heck of a lot higher for men's basketball.

Says you, if you're going to get down to the nitty gritty of things, I don't know. Can't we just keep this conversation basic? :D

When did 1 million dollars become"lowly"? I for one am sickened at the exorbitant amount of money coaches and pro athletes get paid. I love Pearl and Summitt both, but neither one of them deserve to make THAT much money.

thank you. thats the point i was trying to make.

I for one am not sure I would want to be a HC for any amount of money. The hours are ridiculously long, every move you make is under a microscope. If you are winning, the whole fanbase thinks you are a god or goddess. Heaven forbid you lose a few, then everyone is doubting your every decision and wanting your head. That in itself is worth some pretty good money. As far as the salaries, it is a matter of keeping up with the Jones'. If other high caliber teams are paying the big bucks, you gotta follow. There are a lot of schools out there that would pay big league money for a coach of Pat Summit's quality. I want to see her stay here, and I think she would retire before coaching somewhere else. Personally, I think she deserves the money. There are probably a quite a few women's b-ball HCs that owe her a thank you for their salaries. I mean before CPS and the Lady Vol dynasty began, I don't figure women's b-ball coaches made very much money.

The lady vols bring in just as much money as the mens teams in recent years. i dont know about this year tho cause the men got a huge bump in attendance.

Even if you are correct (and you might well be) that the Lady Vols have rought in as much as the men's programs prior to this year, the Lady Vols attendance will not increase. It has plateaued. Attendance at men's games will continue to grow as Bruce builds the program.

Also, the raise to Bruce was in order to keep Bruce around. What is the point of giving more money to Summit? She is not going anywhere...

Predictable, I knew someone would say something like that before I even started the post but you're entitled to your opinion.

Sometimes it's about more than money. When you look at the titles and exposure she has given the school, when you look at the class act and coaching legend that she is, when you look at how hard she's worked for this University and how faithful she has been throughout the process.....I think it's worth a lowly $1 million dollars.

Pat Summitt is Tennessee, so I'll guess you'll have to work through that.

It doesn't matter if the men's program makes more than the womens.

I hate that this is true...but, no you are wrong. It is a business. First and foremost, it is a business. And, you are not going to pay someone in your business an amount of money that doesn't relate directly to how much money they bring into the company.

Yeah, I understand that. But nobody is going to be interested in your business if they don't know about you and/or you don't have a have a good reputation. Pat Summitt brings pub to the university and is a great representative.

Or to put it another way, would it be a good business move to not pay her and keep her motivated and lose her? Me thinks that would be bad for business.

Lose her? She has no other real options. If we are paying her for being a great ambasssador and representative of the University, fine. But using the threat she might leave is disingenuous.
