Pathetic Loss ...

Yes it is.... she calls the plays.... if she wanted Nared more involved, she had power to get her involved.
Have you ever played the game for real? Sometimes when a player is off she's off. They tried to get her involved and it just wasn't happening.

Would anyone consider that this was their 3rd game and just possibly they had tired legs because of the short bench?

That's a reasonable excuse.

But now you'll have to have an excuse for the other 7 losses.

I find it just as informative as "fire Holly", "can't coach", when clearly she can't be on the floor playing...yeah, she's the coach, so I guess that makes it ok to say "off with her head"...:)

GO HOLLY AND GO LADY VOLS!

Exactly.

No. Because with their talent advantage, this should have been over by halftime.

They lost because too often, Tennessee plays down to the level of their competition. What they put on the court yesterday was on par with what they delivered against PSU, VT, Auburn or Ole Miss. Just bad basketball. It's their MO.

It's time after this season to clean out the coaching staff and get a staff in here with a strong alpha male/female as coach that has a philosophy and system that gives this team an identity. A system that is not complex but is effective that can be mastered and made hard to deal with when the team performs with the best of their ability in practice and in the game.

A staff that is not scared to challenge these young ladies and is willing to lose one or two in order to build a solid system and team. I hate bringing up UConn but right now they are the standard. You know what they do, they know what they do, and they do it at a level that is above everyone else. Geno said it himself that they run basic offense and defense. They just do it at very high level.

This current team is relying purely on it's talent with no strong or real direction. It will get you some wins but overall success will be limited. Everyone should know their role and what they are supposed to do and how they are supposed to run the offense and defense. HW shouldn't be trying to coach offense and defense during the game, she and her staff should be focused on adjustments that need to be made when teams make their adjustments.

Motion, ball screens, ball movement with crisp passes, dump downs to Russell or kick out for three, all for open shots should be what they should be doing at a high level every trip down the court. Not standing around the perimeter trying to figure out what they are doing and allowing the defense to dictate what they are doing.

Defensive switching in man-to-man should not be a guessing game. If player X comes off a screen, they should know who is picking up this player every time it's done. In a zone, everyone should know their exact responsibility wherever the ball is moved on the court. Ball goes to corner, G and F trap, C slides down to baseline, off G slides across FT line and off F shades middle. Its simple HS stuff that you drill and drill til it's instinct.

This type of stuff should be standard and instinctual things these young ladies are doing at a high level so that they can now use their heads to think and anticipate ahead instead of spending time figuring out what they doing or supposed to be doing. This also gives the staff the time to coach the talent because you've drilled over and over the fundamentals of your offensive and defensive systems so effort what puts you over the hump. To help make these young ladies better as players. To help DD reduce her turnovers. To help KD become a better 3-pt shooter and better finding open spots to square up hips and shoot from. Help the PGs see the floor better and make better decisions with or without the ball. This can all be done when you have an identity and system that is fundamentally mastered.

Yeah, and then we have to sit and listen to Holly in the presser.... she said the team was outworked..... they showed a lack of effort..... they went through the motions.... she actually said these things.... but will you ever see her take any of these players out and sit them on the bench.... If i am coaching and my players showed what Holly said they showed .... i would sit them on the bench.... put the walk ons in if necessary.....

Another thing that I disagree with Holly on.... is she said in the presser that Nared has shown good things lately, so she wasn't going to get on her. Diamond did have 10 turnovers but she had 34 points so she wasn't going to get on her....
.

I have not had a chance to watch the post game presser yet but if those are in fact her words then I think I have finally got this team figured out. For the past 2 seasons I was under the impression that the coaching staff had a plan and standard that they had set but they were just having trouble getting the players to reach those milestones and then go beyond them or even stay there for that matter. Based on that quote that is not the case.

It is like a light bulb has just turned on for me. As many of their games as I have watched I can't understand how I didn't notice it sooner. If the head coach can say things like "I'm not going to get on her about her turnovers because she had 34 points..." Then what are the assistants or the guard coach going to say? I'm sorry but SOMEONE... I don't care who it is... has to care about the DETAILS of winning every day. Every time you touch a basketball with a LV jersey on whether its in practice, home game, away game, pick up game... it matters. When you are representing your University it matter every single time.

If your head coach isn't going to talk to you about the bad things on a day you lose then when are they going to talk to you about it? I'm guessing probably not after you win. Then if the guard coach wants to talk to you about it what value do their words have if your HC has just said they don't matter? You can't excuse the bad for the good because the good isn't guaranteed. These things add up. That statement is a direct reflection of their record. If details like turnovers (which can be a major contributing factor if you win or lose a game) don't matter some nights then you get losses like PSU, VTech, & Auburn.

Furthermore, if you are trying to switch to a motion offense as they say they are, you are completely killing yourself by not addressing the turnovers. To successfully run a motion offense you must have good passers. Period. It does not work without it. I use to think man these coaches must be so frustrated with the players when in reality they both must be frustrated with each other. Just like for the players what you do on the court you do in practice same goes for the coaching staff. If you are in a post game presser saying you aren't going to address it it's unlikely you are going to address it in practice.

So the next time you see Holly stamp her foot or put her hands on her hips or head when a player sails one into the 3rd row just remember she is the one who said sometimes it doesn't matter. At that point what can she say? No matter what she says the player can always respond... well I thought I was going to go off for 34 tonight... sorry.

I could go on and on. I am not sure what their goal is or was for the year but they are all going to need to have a chat about who they are, what it means to be a LV, and how they plan to get there because it certainly looks like they are just flying blind. They need a list or something that says these are the things we as a coaching staff will not accept NO MATTER WHAT. Let's add more than 16 turnovers per game and lack of effort to that list as bullet point #1 & bullet point #2. Seems like they just don't know who they want to be. All of them staff included.

Somehow some way Holly has to take responsibility. I only coached on the high school level but the failure, and or success, of my team was on me. You accept that mantle when you become a head coach. The pressure is even greater when you follow a legend. A constant concern is motivating your kids to play thie best and to maintain consistency, day in and day out. Good coaches don't throw players under the bus. You accept the fact that the buck stops with you.

It took this long for the bulb to come on? Coaches like Geno are successful because they sweat the details. Losers like Holly don't.....

I was under the impression those things mattered regardless... every night. Never even dawned on me that those words would be spoken.

Successful coaches are never satisfied i.e. Geno, Saben, Belichick, etc. Even if they win by 50 they talk about things they could have done better. Holly is more of a cheerleader, :3cheers:when the ladies win, she is so excited, it almost looks like she is about to pee in her pants. She rarely mentions things they could do better. When the ladies lose is usually the only time she talks about the ladies mistake or what they could do better. Plus she commits the dreaded sin of coaching not to lose versus coaching to win.

Holly ever give a reason or was she asked the question why they didn't foul Robinson when we were standing right beside her but instead let them run 15 seconds off the clock. I was really upset about that dumb play as she is about a 60 percent shooter and I know the other girl missed one but that 15 seconds was valuable.

Yet she has 3 elite 8s in 4 years...its never enough.

3 EE's in 4 years is pretty good, for almost any other program. Tell me, as compared to the talent we put on the court, do you think that we've over achieved or under achieved the last 4 years ?

Thank you! I knew there was a voice of reason out there somewhere....

Many treat Holly as one of their kids who should always get a ribbon to show the achievements and wonderful results she has brought...

I just hate to see her driving our proud tradition into the ditch. And by beating 3 star programs with her 5 star players it is like she was born on third base, and many coddle her and applaud her for hitting a triple.

The other play was when Mercedes gave up that offensive rebound to Robinson, she should have tackled her. Make her earn the points at the line.

Last year was a NC caliber team with the loaded roster. E8 is a disappointment, not anything to be proud of. The fact that the team performed as badly as they did that people were cheering because they made it that "far" just reflects the reality of where the program is today.

Yes i know many love Holly and I do as well personally, but as the CEO of the Lady Volunteers.... she has been an abject failure..... um IMHO....

....and I would ask anyone to cite the major accomplishments ....ANYTHING, she has done to push forth the excellence of the LV program.....

and please don't say...well she followed a legend, that is tough, she has had injuries on her team.... she is playing this year with essentially 7 players (other coaches can do it)... she has made the Elite 8 for 3 years (making the Elite 8 with her roster is not a major accomplishment)....

Anyway good luck to her as she continues to drive us to promised land... at least to the top 8 or 16 teams...

Ms State is doing great with its leader on the floor, the #24 recruit in the country.... we have #1, #3, #6, and others who were rated higher.... I never see Vivians take a night off....

Anyway, hope Holly drives us toward a national championship.... we should be competing for this

Yes perhaps I am being too harsh.... I just hear frequently on the board that.... Holly is doing great.... she is just coming into her own after 35 years in coaching.... just now getting her bearings.....

If you break down the things she is doing and the things that she is SAYING about her team.... I do not see how that in any way is a recipe for success...

In my opinion she is being coddled.... by fans who want her to succeed (which i do as well).... want to pat her on the head and get her a cup of juice....

I know i am in the minority.... so I just concede and say sign her up for another extension.... and I will root for us to get to another Elite 8.... it will signify big success
