Surprised that nobody's started a thread on this yet.

So, is any potential outcry and punishment deserved or overblown?

I read somewhere that the League might penalize them by reducing their number of draft picks.

ESPN - Sources: Goodell determines Patriots broke rules - NFL

Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.

I read that about possibly taking some draft picks. I think that's a bad plan. Make them forfeit the game instead. Don't punish them in the future for what they did now. Make it hurt now. How would it feel for them to (hypothetically) go 16-0, win the super bowl, but have to forfeit the game on opening day?

It's simply industrial espionage. If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying. The Patriots are just better at it than the losers around the league.

Obviously the Pats aren't better at it, or else they wouldn't get caught. Maybe other teams are doing the same thing?

But anyway, is there a line to cross?

What about bribing opposing players or coaches to tip them off? What about bugging the opposing locker room?

The Patriots have won more Super Bowls under Belichick than anyone else has since his tenure began. Thus, they're better at it. Bribing people for info would probably fall under various game fixing stautes, making it a felony. Bugging a locker room would also be illegal in most, if not all, states.

Are you taking anything away from Belichick's extraordinary football knowledge, game planning, personnel decisions, and motivational skills? Surely he didn't need to cheat to win all those rings.

How about putting a directional microphone on a ball boy on the opposing sideline? That way you could pick up what the coaches were saying and send it right to your staff's headsets.

you're just going to have a hard time convincing me this falls under the "good" when discussing the ethics involved with this move.

and while i'm not a saint, who believe, in certain extents, in the "you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'" mentality, this clearly crosses the lines in my book.

it does seem to handicap the notion that he's a genius doesn't it, if this is true......

The only thing that matters in the NFL is your record. If the opposition is careless enough to have their signals stolen, that's their problem. Belichick moves up several notches in my eyes with these actions.

Correct. The reality of the situation is that there are 27 other coaches around the league thinking to themselves: "Why didn't I think of that?"

Crennel and Mangini both worked for Belichick, so it's probably safe to assume they are well aware of these practices. That's two.

had it been an individual player who done something to tarnish the integrity of the game.....he would get hammered!

It really doesn't bother me all that much, but it does prove that if a guy like Belichick is a complete jerk to enough people eventually somebody will retaliate.

I don't think this one looks too cool for Bellichode.
It's pretty cheap in my opinion. It's not horrible, but it's a bit low. They obviously spent more time charting signals than actually preparing like most teams do with film study. Takes the strategy out of the game.
