Pay Heupel $10,000,000 now for 10 years

He's getting a market rate right now. Stupid to give him a raise tomorrow when he doesn't even have another offer out there.

And another lesson for you, everyone is replaceable. I don't care who they are, how great they think they are or whatever, there's always somebody else capable and willing to replace them. I dont anticipate Director White bungling like previous administrations, but I could be wrong there.

Except everyone isn’t replaceable. That’s why the Nick Saban’s, Landon James’, and others who are elite at what they do make as much as they do.

There’s no large list of attainable coaches who can replicate what CJH has done. And the odds of us making that hire are slim to none giving how short the list is

Everyone is replaceable. Nick Saban didn't get a $5,000,000 raise in 2008 or 2009. Heupel hasn't won a championship.

I'm done arguing about it. Nobody is offering Heupel $10,000,000 tomorrow. If he wins a championship this season, yeah that could happen. But you don't pay that kind of coin until you have to. No reason for him to ever leave here if we can beat any offer out there. It's just opposing fans' wet dreams that he "goes to Oklahoma" which will never happen.

That should do it
You're insane. You don't throw that much money at any coach much less one with less than 2 years on the job. Might want to cool the jets a bit and see what his team looks like when he graduates that first recruiting class. I'm not talking about performance incentives and some raises to his salary, but you sure as hell don't throw Saban money at him at this point. See aTm and Jimbo for example.

Nah. Don’t overreact. He needs to win an SEC Championship before he gets $10 million. Just look at Jimbo and Mel Tucker for phat contracts that should never have been paid.
You don't throw that out for SEC titles. You give guys who win nattys that kind of scratch. Tucker is a great example as is Jimbo at aTm. You need sustained success not risk that kind of money on what might be a one off type of year. Don't get me wrong, I hope Heupel is here for a long time to come, but you don't over react based off a year and a half. That's fiscally insane.

I already gave you the reason. Supply and demand. The lack of supply of coaches who can do what he’s done, determines his value.

You’re welcome for the Econ 101 lesson
Good thing you're not running my business. Did you pass 101? Big difference in giving lessons and actually passing

Nah not 10 million a year. At least not yet. He definitely deserves to be compensated for the year he’s having. But not 10 million. I feel like 7 is about right.

First - he just got a 1M + raise so if he stays 10 years that works out to your $10 M
Second - with the right qb - this offense is lethal - with the wrong one - this offense is not that great. If he doesn't start the right qb next year we will not be very good imho. Let's see if he starts the wrong guy again at QB before going all in.

I understand your post. Sometimes it’s better to step up and let someone know how much they are appreciated as opposed to let’s wait and see attitude. I think he likes it here but facts are he could talking to ten schools right now. Just saying.

I'm sure Heupel and White talk. One of the best ADs in the business had enough confidence to hire him twice.

You take care of us, and we'll take care of you. Play it out, and raise your kids in a great town. This ain't Norman.

It's gonna be fine.

Doesn’t have anything to do with economics… but hypothetically if you have an account manager that delivers $1m in sales annually across 10 accounts he is worth 80k base + bonus or whatever. If next year he lands Another account for an additional 1m his compensation should jump to 160k the month he does it but you deliver an extra nice bonus. If he delivers that account and others in subsequent years then his base increases.

The trust and relationship he has with AD White says he will compensated appropriately for the results he delivers. Danny knows what the market is and will keep him here as long as he wants to coach in the sec college game.

This thinking and giving wat too premature extensions and raises is what has gotton us to where we have been the last 15 + years. Lets wait and see what happens over the next few years before we start doing things like this.
What's gonna happen is he's gonna go where he's getting top5 money and we'll be screwed. Enjoy it while it lasts, he won't be hear long if he's not getting what he deserves.

$8.35m

What makes you think we can't offer enough to keep him here? Tell me something that any other program in the country has, besides money, that we don't have? Why would he uproot his family and start over again? He's already started building something here. There's more to it than money but if it takes more money to keep him here we got that. But you don't have to pay him extra right now. Coaches don't up and quit in the middle of a season to go get a new job. This is a discussion for at the end of the season with a full body of work. That's when he might *entertain* offers.

I wouldn’t offer him another raise this year unless he wins the SEC since we just bumped him a million. We may be forced to match an offer and I’d guess we would. If he impresses again next season and recruiting is going strong then maybe it’s time to lock him up longer term. JMO

Prior to CJH, TN hasn’t had any luck in replacing a coach since Fulmer. God forbid we let CJH get away because of money. If we do, hopefully we aren’t aimlessly trying to replace him for the next 15 years.
