PC Graphics card discussion

No way it’s near the 4090, imo.

Absolutely not. I’m going to go out on a very small limb and say the 7900 XTX will be very similar or slightly lower in perf to the 4080 while the 7900 XT will give more of a 4070 Ti type of perf.

I also think RT perf for both cards will be 85-90% of the RTX card equivalence I mentioned above.

Even so those prices might help bring the 4080 price down. These cards have gotten way too overpriced though.

Really thinking about that 7900 XT card. I want to see perf reports and see what NVidia does with the 4080 price (if any). Of course I have a new baby so I’m not even sure buying a card right now is a good idea but I want to 😂

Pretty happy with my recent purchase of a $250 RX 6600 8GB card. Getting 80-100 FPS at 1440p high settings. My MacOS partition booted right up no issues. Had a slight issue with my Linux partition but was able to boot to a terminal and delete a config and then it booted fine.

From what I’m seeing it looks like the 4080, although a good card, is not the value some were hoping it would be. NVidia definitely left a gap between it and the 4090 unlike in the 3000 series. But performance per dollar is the same as the 3080. Basically, 50% more performance for a 50% higher price tag.

Disappointing launch overall so far for Nvidia IMO

Pretty sure prices will come down. What I really would like to see is energy consumption go down. My space heater gets hot, and in VR it's consumption is just stupid on the 3080.

I really hope the 7900 XTX and XT both have fantastic showings. RT won’t be there, but if the non-RT gos can be right there or better with the 4080 NVidia will have to lower.

The shortages we experienced last generation gave them the blueprint to keep that MSRP sky high. I hope they somehow end up losing their ass, but they will probably make record profits.

Unfortunately I agree with you. I want them to fall big, but they won’t.

I sure hope so. You’re still gonna see NVidia fans that by their graphics cars no matter what the cost.

I have gone back and forth between Nvidia and AMD for many years. ATM I have to admit I am more likely to choose Nvidia.

This is a result of experience. I have built both systems but I see articles talk about benchmarks as if only those numbers matter. However The last couple of AMD cards I had had issues; screen tearing, games crashing, poorer interface, and even power headaches. (which I might add are the worst because it's the hardest to diagnose.)

All other things being equal that is why I lean towards Nvidia ATM, but that could change tomorrow. I have no loyalty to either, let me see how a card performs for the money, and what sort of problems it's users have.

I briefly had an amd card but returned it when I found a better deal on Nvidia. I actually kinda liked the user interface.

What’s a power headache?

When there are power issues either from a bad PSU, or a mobo issue, or a Graphics card issue it is hard to diagnose because it can not easily be reproduced. It will cause crashes.. blue screens a lot in old days and just weird behavior. Even if you know it's electrical it's hard to figure out teh cause. Usually if that is an issue it's because you have either a bad PSU or not enough power. (NEVER EVER EVER try and save money by getting a cheap PSU) Or someone daisy chained the power to your gpu instead of giving your GPU separate power lines for each connection as you should. But something obscure like a quality issue with the graphics card or mobo is next to impossible to reproduce, and so you keep trying everything usually BEFORE THAT. It's usually a quality control issue. Sometimes it's dirty pool played between the card devs and game devs and drivers too..... Whatever the reasons in recent years it's an issue I have seen more with AMD then Nvidia.

However truly it can happen with any card. The best thing to do is before you buy a card go to forum for help for that card and see if people are having problems and what they are. (there are always going to be problems but are they being addressed)

I love AMD for processors I use a Ryzen 7 system and I loved their GPU's in the past but around 2014-2017 AMD cards became headaches and seemed so desperate to keep up they cut corners. Those issues may be worked out now...but I'd want to research the boards before I'd go back. I know during that time it was like every other AAA game had issues on AMD cards. Maybe it was dirty pool and drivers, but one way or another it wasn't worth the headache. Ultimately what are the games you want to play being designed for?

I want AMD to stay competitive though so if they have an answer to the 4080 and it runs VR as well I'd be interested. I say VR because everything else honestly is easily run by both cards these days...

I agree. The 4080 at current pricing is not a good deal at all. I am interested in what Powercolor and Sapphire is going to bring to the table.

Are those the top AIB companies to look at for Radeon cards?

I honestly don’t know as I’ve never looked into getting a Radeon card until the 7000 series. I was a EVGA fan up until now.

Sapphire has a loyal following like EVGA and many think of them as the EVGA of AMD cards. Their Toxic line is Sapphire's best.
