Pearce has not (Publicly) Declared

Very good points! This will be an unpopular opinion but he needs another year in college to polish his game more. He may have been sandbagging to avoid injury but there were many games where he was not a factor or would be well out of position. I know he was projected to be the number one overall pick at the beginning of the year by some analysts and maybe my expectations were too high based off of those projections. He just did not look like a number one overall draft pick, defensive end. He has had several great moments and individual games but I would view a draft pick that high as a defensive end would be a game changer and I just did not see that in his overall body of work.
Thank you Mel

An attorney who seems to be well connected called DeerPark has said UT offers financial materials and encourages players to get someone to help them with their money. The school itself, I believe, cannot manage their money for them, only give them advice that they should manage it wisely.
These players could put 30-50 k per year into a self directed IRA which can’t be tapped until age 59.5. Avoids current taxes. Dollar cost averaging monthly adds up.
Or use after tax dollars to do it same thing. Something, anything to avoid having nothing left a few years after their college career is over.

It's the getting in the league and getting to that second contract ASAP that's the reason I'd never tell a kid to stay in college. If they believe they can get a second contract and it's a no brainer for Pearce, get in the league.

Too much can go wrong and end a career when you earn money running into about 300lb men on every play even in college.

Pearce seems to be a low key guy and may be working his butt off to get either school finished and/or ready for the Combine/Pro Day.
I said he would declare and go, but now days it’s not so black/white as it used to be. First, none of these kids are promised a 2nd contract, between being overrated or getting hurt. So they can stay in college and get a guaranteed amount(let’s say 3 million for a college season). If they get hurt they have million dollar insurance policies to take care of that, IF they have a better year they might end up going even higher in the draft. So at that point you have the guaranteed 3 million plus a possible chance to go even higher with a better 1st contract. So if they suck or get hurt during that first contract and never sign a 2nd they still have 5 years of guaranteed pay at millions of dollars compared to 4 years(1st rounders get guaranteed 4 with team option for 5th). There have been plenty of 1st rounders that absolute sucked in the NFL and never got a 2nd contract. Again I’m 99% sure he is going into the draft, I mean I think he’s going somewhere between 10-20 in the 1st round.

Check the signing bonus for first round players.

He needs to come back and play another year, he mostly disappeared last year in a lot of the games other than making a play or 2 and then nothing. I really can’t see how his draft stock could be that strong this year. He needs to play more consistent.

I did and again the signing bonus is part of their actual first contract! So it’s not the usual signing bonus a player back in the day received as it’s still CAPPED as part of the entire rookie cap. But I put it in simplier terms for you with numbers.

Player A: leaves junior year of college or redshirt soph. He is pick 25 which is a total of 15 million dollars for rookie contract. He doesn’t turn out to be good enough and is cut after his 4th year and thus no 5th year option picked up. He makes a total of 15 million.

Player B: He is projected to be pick 25 in NFL draft but stays for his senior year or redshirt junior year. He makes 3 million in NIL. He works his way to a top 10 pick and gets drafted 10th overall. That contract including signing bonus is 24.4 million. Has uneven career and 5th year is not picked up and he doesn’t sign a 2nd contract. He makes a total of 27.4 million.

I mean this is what they have to think about. I mean even at pick 10 with 24.4 million guaranteed, if he stayed and got himself into pick 5 he is making 36 million instead of 24.4 and he made 3 million more in college. So yeah, it’s great to look forwards to that 2nd contract, but that’s never the whole picture.

Pearce is already a late to mid first round pick. He's not likely to go Reggie for us if he stays so he's unlikely to advance much.

For another instance, Nico is already grading as the #2 QB in next year's draft and in the top 5 overall, I think. He's unlikely to pass Manning and more likely to be passed by someone who has a breakout year. Staying beyond next year is crazy.

If you think you need to increase your draft grade AND can increase it, that's fine but you're rolling the dice there. VERY few athletes even get drafted so my advice is to shoot your shot when it's actually there instead of gambling.

I just quickly ran through 5 different draft sites and none of them had Pearce below 3rd in this class and edge.

Statistically his Sophmore and Junior seasons are comparable. He had more tackles, 2.5 less sacks. He was used more in pass coverage this year also. Showed he has that athleticism. So if his draft hype was high coming off last year, should be relatively high now.

I even said he would go PRO, however it’s a much different thought process compared to when Manning came back or when plenty of others have left early. They can make money now while they couldn’t before(not withstanding the under the table money). Much harder decision now days even for a possible 1st rounder.
