Pearl guilty but still the best option for TN (Parrish)

I hate to sound like a simpleton, but I have one worry in an analogous sense: UT football hired Derek Dooley. Not trying to bash him, but he's a no-name. I'm not surprised that we couldn't hire a higher-profile coach, and I think we wouldn't be any more successful at finding a basketball coach willing to take the job at this point in time.

DD was like 10th on the wish list and some of it has to be the timing of the hire.

I know for a fact the first name UT would go after would be a gigantic hire and there would be some interest on the coach's end. Whether they land him or not is clearly not set in stone.

I'm still trying to figure out how gauging the interest of Rick Pitino, Jay Wright, and Lon Kruger, being turned down by Tim Floyd, and finally hiring Sean Miller constitutes "struggling to hire a coach." If that's struggling, I hope UT struggles in each and every coaching search for the rest of my life.

Sean didn't paint his chest or cry in each of his interviews. Those two improprieties simply make him unqualified.

One of the names you listed was who I heard the first call would be to.

For some reason some of our fans don't think it's an attractive job, but the facilities are top notch, fan support is there, the commitment from administration, willingness to pay top dollar is there and finally to his credit Pearl raised the profile of the job.

In normal circumstances, I am very confident we could find a solid coach to replace Pearl. Depending on how the situation with the NCAA turns out, however, a lot of coaches in the upper part of our list will not want to come here.

That being said, if a one year suspension is handed down, I still think it would be difficult to keep Pearl.

I totally agree, but don't you think it would also depend on how the NCAA punishes UT?

If all that happens to the UT PROGRAM (not Bruce Pearl) is a scholly lost for the next two years, and a three year probation, it's still a very good job.

Bingo. I actually emailed Parish and told him he forgot to mention that Arizona hired Sean Miller, a very good coach that was on the radar of many teams. Not exactly a dud hire. Furthermore, the cause for firing Pearl is not contingent of findin a "slam dunk" replacement. If he is fired, it is because he deserves it and will be a liability if kept. Michigan's football situation isn't totally comparable to UT's. UT is closer to a title than Michigan is. A good coach will be intrigued by a team that just went to the Elite 8 with what some call a bad floor coach.

Which is why it's moronic to even consider waiting until August to take action.

If they do anything in August they deserve any and all repercussions.

I agree with both of you, but perhaps I'm a little more ignorant about how this works. If we don't know the penalties until August, do we have much of a choice? Hopefully we know all this by April, but in the event that we don't, what do we do?

Pearl is employed at UT's whim right now. If the formal allegations make it obvious the 'AA is going to take severe punitive action, they can fire him without waiting for the hearing or the sanctions.

So it's basically a matter of guessing based on the allegations how severe the sanctions will be. I'm not sure how difficult that is, but I am immediately distrustful of Mike Hamilton's ability to do it well. :ermm:

If the allegations are anything other than what the administration already knows about the basketball program, I think Pearl will be immediately fired.
