yeah... Roy probably won it tonight, unfortunately. Must be hard having to play with 7 or 8 McDonald's All-Americans. I can only imagine how hard it's been on the guy.

Had UT continued to win, then Pearl had a legitimate shot to contend with Roy. However, UT stumbled down the stretch. Regarding how hard Roy's year must have been, though, you need to get your facts straight. There are only 3 McDonald's All-Americans on the Tarheels this year, and all 3 of them are freshmen. Two of those 3 guys are starters because of vacancies left on the roster from players that left early to go to the NBA. The leading returning scorer from last year's team averaged just over 3 points per game last year, so YES, Roy has had a difficult season.

UNC's freshman are a lot better than some of our juniors and seniors. Roy just won a NC last year. He doesn't need a COY award. By the way, didn't he win it last year??

I realize that since men’s basketball hasn’t been a strong program at UT in the past 4 decades that UT fans aren’t very knowledgeable about the sport, but there is a reason that coaches don’t like to play lineups full of freshmen. No matter how much hype they get coming out of high school, they generally don’t set the college ranks on fire. They have a lot to learn, they turn the ball over way too much, and they aren't strong enough to battle on the boards against juniors and seniors. ANY coach that can have freshmen play as many minutes as UNC has this year and have the kind of year that they’ve had deserves the National Coach of the Year award.

Minutes played by Freshmen This Year

Carolina

Tyler Hansbrough – 772
Bobby Frasor – 718
Marcus Ginyard – 500
Danny Green – 409
Mike Copeland – 45

Total for UNC – 2,444 minutes, (95.2 minutes per game, or 47.6% of ALL MINUTES)

UT

Ryan Childress – 163
Ben Bosse – 32
Justin Jackson – 5
Tanner Wild – 5

Total for UT – 205 (11.3 minutes per game, or 5.7% of all minutes)

Carolina lost its top 7 scorers from its team last year. That's the highest number of leading scorers that ANY team in ACC history has ever lost in one season. Carolina is playing a ton of freshmen and is still 2nd in the ACC and will be getting the #3 seed in the NCAA tournament that UT had up until about a week ago. In addition, if Carolina beats Duke on Saturday, which is a very distinct possibility, they could very well end up with a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament. Pearl has done a great job this year. Roy Williams has done the best job this year.
If this situation doesnt scream recruiting poster Ive never seen one. The ONLY reason Williams is in the running is NC gets a huge boost in recruiting by being NC blue...they get what Duke wont take...and thats pretty good. Id bet you my next paycheck that if you put williams in a vols head coach spot next year hed be overachieving to go 20-10

UNC gets what Duke won't take? Carolina has by far the #1 recruiting class in the nation coming in next year.

That bet is THAT much easier to propose since you know there is absolutely ZERO chance of that ever happening.

As Doug Gottlieb so astutely pointed out, that's 20+ year old freshman Tyler Hansbrough.

Didn't a freshman win Dean Smith, the most overrated coach in any sport of all time, his first national championsip? Some guy named Jordan.

So you think Michael Jordan carried that team? That's funny.

And you could take those freshman at UNC and start them at 3 out of the 5 positions here at UT. I can't believe you can honestly say that Roy WIlliams has done more with less than Bruce Pearl. Yeah, UNC had to reload this year, but they are loaded. Can't exactly say that about UT who doesn't have a decent inside player and is playing a 6'4 guard at power forward.

Didn't say that. Worthy played one of the best games in Final Four history against Georgetown. However, if Jordan bricks that shot, nobody would remember or care about the performance Big Game James had.

...That's it exactly. Nobody is saying Roy Williams didn't do an outstanding job, but what Bruce Pearl has pulled off is utterly unbelievable given the cards he was dealt.

Definitely..I'm a big UNC fan..but even I can admit Pearl has exceeded expectations more than Roy did..Roy will be COY in the ACC and thats not bad considering the coaches in that conference.

I love when new guys come on this board with an attitude. I forget more about college basketball between 8-9 AM on New year's Day than you know. You obviously somehow got misrouted trying to find the JR Reid Tribute Site or the Slurproywilliams.com board.

There were one or two more decent players on that team as well. Perhaps this will refresh your memory.

Unlike you, I have a memory. I'm not forced to go to links. Sam Perkins was developing into a great player, wasn't there yet. Jimmy Black, Matt Doherty? Big deal. That was the team Indiana annihilated in the finals the year before, with Jordan replacing Al Wood.
