Pearl on last play

I think Florida scored with 11 seconds to go. By the time Pearl realized Tennessee wasn't taking it to the rim, he considered calling a timeout. At that point, however, there were only three or four seconds left and he decided against it.

Sorry it was 14.7 to go..... plenty of time for him to realize they weren't running this "phantom" play he says he supposedly called.

This was a tournament game for us. We no longer can win the east and our SOS plus key wins mean nothing anymore. We have to almost win out or get a SEC tourney bid to make the tournament.(NCAA not NIT) can't believe I have to add that.

I'm upset and sound like a hater but we have had horrible play calls since game 7 of this year. It has always been run out clock and throw up a prayer. (not only on end game possessions but called plays)Considering our team % that is not a good call by player or coach. Drive the ball to the hoop.

We would have lost if Tatum tried to take Parsons anywhere. No reason for him to have the ball in his hands at the end of the game after playing such a miserable game.

I fully support this team, but the free throw shooting is maddening, especially from guards/forwards such as Hopson and Tatum. If we made our free throws we wouldn't have to be in these last second situations. They are not focusing and have very little confidence at the stripe.

What makes this even more maddening is that this is the third(?) time we've taken a three as the last shot when a two would have won it or sent it to overtime.

Charlotte
Southern Cal
Georgia
Florida

I don't remember what we ran against Alabama.

When our football program was dominant our basketball team was average.....this is indeed a good sign. I know.....I'm reaching.....have nothing else to lose at this time.

That's what I get for listening to Kesling. He's the one who said it was about 11 seconds.

Not sure about a "phantom play", but Pearl clearly wanted his players to attack the basket. And that's exactly what I would like to see in these situations. Only trailing by one, you give yourself a chance to make a driving shot, draw a foul, or get an offensive rebound.

After the game Pearl said he wanted Cam or Scotty to drive to the rim with Brian sealing the post.

He also noted that the play got off to a bad start because Tobias threw the ball in to Cameron instead of Melvin.

O I completely agree with you there. You've definitely got to drive the ball there. 100%. All I'm saying is if he noticed the play started off wrong why not take the timeout? In that atmosphere, that pressure, a game in which we controlled the entire game basically.... why not take a time out get our guys together calm our guys down, make sure we know exactly what CBP wants to happen. Cause he said if they had run the play we would have won no doubt. If that's the case then call the timeout, make sure ur guys know the play. Come out of the timeout and execute the play that you "know" is going to seal the Win.

Because Bruce has lost his edge.

Personally, I would rather see a team attack the basket in transition, rather that out of a timeout. But once that advantage was lost, Pearl probably could have called a timeout with 5-6 seconds left and set something up going to the rim.

I hear ya. Can we just go back to being a football school again. I'm beginning to miss the old days. Fun times in the fall. Acting like there was no sports in the winter...

wesrucker247

Pearl said Vols didn't run play that was called in final seconds, and he has no idea why. Wanted Hopson/Tatum taking Parsons to the rim.

wesrucker247

Pearl said he didn't call timeout because they'd have scored if they just ran the play he called. He's furious at several things.

So if he calls time out to make sure he gets the play he wanted then we would have won .. So this on is on him . :ermm:

LOL...I'm glad you feel the same....I'd sacrifice the men's basketball program to go back to being relevant in the college football world in the top 10 competing for S.E.C. and Nat'l Titles every season. No disrespect to the men's team but at U.T....the football program is 100> than men's basketball. It is the university's cash cow. Also leave the winter sports to Pat Summitt.....her Lady Vols can handle it :good!: !

Thata boy Bruce. Take one out of the old Fulmer book. Blame the players. Ignore the fact you could have called a timeout.

Should have taken control of the game once the technical was called. Should have never come down to the last shot. It was painfully obvious that Goins wasn't on board with whatever the last playcall may have been.

Maybe Goins was affected by that hard lick he took on the head. Actually, I'm not joking...that looked painful.

4-10 from the line on the road. 40%. Plus, missing the front end of a 1-and-1 costs you another. That's pitiful.

I'm sure I wasn't alone jumping up and down and yelling at the TV for a timeout with 14 seconds left.

Give it up. Florida was denying the passing lanes big time on the last several possessions by UT. We just don't have a guy that can consistently drive to the hole and not turn the ball over on his way through the lane. Hopson has all the athletic ability in the world but just not very good handles and he is our only guy quick enough with enough size to consistently get to the rim. We should have won the game anyway. Free throw misses lost the game for us.

Sounds like this team is going into the tank. If Pearl is losing control of this team, we might be looking at a .500 team by year end.
