from TFP...

Asked about his team’s perimeter defense Tuesday night, UT coach Bruce Pearl offered this: “We’re working on it. It’s not something that’s just going to happen in one game.”

Pressed on the issue several more times, Pearl admitted that these Vols have presented him a unique challenge: They’re “too big.”
“Our guards are big. We’re too big. My teams have always been undersized, and we’ve just got ourselves in a situation where we lost three senior guards and Ramar (Smith). That’s four guys that were 6-2, and we didn’t replace them with anybody but Bobby (Maze, 6-foot-2) and Daniel (West, 6-1). So we’ve just got ourselves where we’re a little too big.
“You could see it against a number of quick guards (this season). It’s been a problem for us.”
“It is what it is,” Pearl said. “It is frustrating. Our guards have a hard time keeping guys in front of them. It’s definitely a weakness. People scout and watch tape, and they look at or guards and they say, ‘We can go by these guys.’

i'd ask him about the lack of effort on defense, and everybody getting beat on backdoor cuts

Being blown by hasn't been the problem he suggests. Meeks, Christmas and Bouldin just killed us shooting open jumpers. Size sounds like an excuse.

If quickness is really a huge defensive issue, why don't we zone?

My first thought as well. Jodie wasn't really taking the ball to the hole all night.

So we lost to Louisville last year because they were too long (big and tall) on defense and we couldn't get our shots off. Now we are losing because we are too big. You can't have it both ways.

They are lazy on offense too. They don't make sharp cuts or move with purpose. They just have a total effort problem.

wldn't be surprised if he was tipsy. my teammate who is now coaching saw bruce last year at the final four with his current gf, and was hammered. said he was funny tho

I don't think he makes any bones about liking a cold beer on occasion. He has also been known to make tongue-in-cheek comments.

I'm going with the theory that it was opposite day.

I'm just curious. With all the (obvious) experts we have here....why aren't you all coaching somewhere? Anywhere?

Jerry Green wasn't a coach either....he just rolled the ball out there and said have at it!

I guess the site should just shut down then. None of us are college coaches therefore everything posted is garbage?

Compared to what the coach says? Yes, I'd call it garbage. I have faith that the head basketball coach knows more than posters on a chat board.

People talk like if they were given the opportunity that they could make a team perfect. It laughable, quite frankly.
