Pearl's Final Drive Down 75

I just googled him..............

Damn, his only year at WVU wasn't exactly NBA material. Averaged 14 points in 28.5 minutes of play. What happened to him? I see that he's now playing in some crap semi-pro league.
Kicked off the team at West Virginia amid allegations of NCAA violations surrounding his recruitment.

When I was in Philadelphia, I asked an assistant coach who I consider near impeccable in judging players, both talent and character, about Selby. He looked at me, smiled, and said "You mean the next Jonathan Hargett?" Take that for what it's worth.

Oh boy. Hopefully, he is wrong this time.

I recall WVU's coaching search being a circus about that time before they lucked into Beilein. Any truth to the rumor that they might have gotten Huggins back then if not for the Hargett situation?

It definitely looked like that was the reason Dakich turned around and went back to BGSU.

Huggs was happy at UC then. He had turned down multiple NBA offers and wasn't dealing with Nancy Zimpher yet.

Dakich actually accepted the job, got to Morgantown, found out about all of the silliness going on around the program, and turned around and returned to Bowling Green.

So is anybody in the Knoxville media going to ask Bruce what in the world he was thinking by having 60 percent of his crummy-shooting team's attempts come from behind the arc?

Is this a serious question? I kid, but really, I'll tell you exactly what the KNS and the Sports Animal will do.

KNS: Adams and Hooker will write a nice a little fluff piece on how this was a banner year by Tennessee standards.

SA: Dearstone will probably ramble on about the womens game vs. Ball State. Heather and Doc will most likely just add points every now and then.

Sports Page show will most likely do something like, "Who would you want to drink with after an NCAA tourney loss", or something nice and froo froo like that.

The God Awful 12-3 show will most likely not have anything to do with this whatsoever, as they will be talking about the NBA, or something on Coach O.

Sports Talk will most likely consist of Jimmy Hyams saying "I don't know", or "I can't comment on that at this point", and Wilkerson will sit back there and nod his head while thinking "This guy is an idiot".

13 and 5 in one year of work? I'd take that if he stayed longer than the one year Hargett had.

You've essentially covered 13 hours of radio programming in 6 paragraphs... and really, The Animal doesn't deserve that much coverage.

I don't think it is too much to ask but the expectations of going to a final four after losing two of your best guards and two more of his players to off the court mistakes is a little high (pardon the pun) IMO. Pearl himself said he did not have high expectations for this team. He has to reload quickly and get some real talent in here. Hopson may take some time to turn into a real player, but we need a NBA player in here soon. Can he do it, time will tell but I think he has earned that time.

That's the thing that bothers me and various others here: we now HAVE "real talent." In fact, I issue this challenge: name a team, and state a case, for one single team (and, sadly, there were quite a few) who beat UT this year that has more talent. I'm calling Gonzaga a push, and being generous with that, even.

Kansas and Memphis have more talent. So does LSU. The talent on this team, while good, is overestimated. Just because you have 12 guys who can play a little doesn't mean much. Last time I checked, you only play 5 at a time.

Drunkenly, I had completely forgotten about the Memphis game, which I had already essentially erased from my memory banks. But I think you would at least concede that, of the 4 Pearl-coached UT squads, this one was the most talented.

It's the most talented, but it's not as superior in that respect to his first team as people would lead you to believe.

.... and the most underachieving.

Yet it's the only one of Pearl's teams to not win at least 1 NCAA tournament game. The ass-whipping UT received last year at the hands of Louisville was instructive: we were "out-athleted," and sometimes all the heart and hustle in the world will not trump that. So now we've got ath-uh-letes, and we get outhustled. Somewhere in the midst of this, there has to be a workable balance.

Exactly - his first team had a PG that is playing significant minutes in the NBA right now.

1-6, I have to agree with you. From the 7th man on, there was quite a drop off in '06. But, like you said, you only play 5 at a time.
