Pearson Down! Keeeeerrrrraaaappp!

I was a radiology tech at Parkwest, and I'm now an RN in Knoxville and finishing up my MSN at UT...

We've told several patients they should wait a few days prior to having an MRI due to swelling...

We've also used the wording, "the MRI process can take as long as 45 minutes depending on the severity and the procedure, and you'll need to be able to stay completely still for the duration of the procedure"

Then you are advising them based on information you got from I don't know where and almost every knee that has an mri done is swollen and jacked up anyway, which is why they are doing it. It's just not a rush to get one done. Orthos are bone docs and.work by feel and protocol along with symptoms. Most ortho docs don't trust mri readings as well, other than when they verify diagnosis of s particular tear, such as an acl or rotator cuff.
For back/neck you would be correct. For a knee patient that is already not moving it, comfort level has nothing to do with it.

I've been with surgeons in surgery reading mris and Xrays since @ 1997 going over how injuries occurred, pre op planning, postop treatment, etc for trauma, and sports med injuries of the leg and arm/shoulder. Ive also had a dozen surgeries of my own and 3 mri's and swelling was never brought up as a reason not to do one. I'd ask somebody why you are telling people to wait. If you already have the order from the ortho, it's not in your place at all to tell the patient to wait due to swelling.

Please, tell me when you've ever seen an MRI done same day, again, just 1.

Could be high school, college, NFL, NBA, hockey, anything. Tons of options, just give me one...

Tore my ACL twice playing college soccer; both times I got an MRI within about 12-16 hours. Game ended at 5:00, 7:00 AM next morning MRI.

That said, the trainers can do tests, like the Lachman test, on the spot which gives them a good idea of whether there is a tear. However, those tests can only tell you so much.My second ACL tear the trainers did a Lachman test and though everything was fine, but the MRI (which they did because I had torn my ACL previously) told them otherwise

If Wolf didn't even have ice on the knee, as is being reported, then swelling obviously wouldn't be a reason for "delaying" the MRI.

Good grief I feel like I have learned a lot about the medical profession here tonight!
