I'm not going to throw a friend under the bus based on hearsay. He told someone and nothing came of it for years... not Paterno's fault.
It wasn't hearsay. If McQueary had come to Paterno and said "someone told me that Sandusky has been molesting children," that would be hearsay. McQueary provided a first hand account, having witnessed Sandusky's act.
Now, Paterno could have assumed McQueary was lying or mistaken, but given the accusation, that was a risk that any right-thinking person wouldn't have taken.

Unless you directly tell Joe Paterno exactly what happened, which he didn't, it's beating around the bush. Paterno did nothing wrong and is still a fantastic human being.
