Periscope...

Maybe it's just me but as a 38 year old adult I don't really want to watch a group of 17-20 year old boys partying in hopes that one says they might commit. My attention span to sift through Twitter is pretty much nil as well. I can patiently wait till said information is compiled and presented in highlights.

And yet you are sifting through a recruiting site looking for news on a players recruitment. Talk about the pot and the kettle. I bet if during the broadcast last night that warrior openly said he was committed & I posteda link to it you wouldnt watch that either? Oh brother did you miss the point here

Scanning this site takes a fraction of time that watching some kids live in hopes that say something happens.

And no I wouldn't watch. I would read it here the morning after in a post, do the obligatory 'BOOM!' And go on with the rest of my day.

Maybe if I was closer to their age I might be more inclined to watch. Then again, when I was that age I would have been out doing other things on Friday-Saturday night.

FWIW I'm not trying to be snarky. I don't follow recruiting passionately like most on this board do. I peak in to see if we got a commit and that's about it.

There are too many variables that are controlled by young people w periscope that will be the issue. Nothing good can come from kids having a live camera to the world to say & do anything that comes to their minds. Its a nightmare senario for parents, etc.

Well if they screw up chalk it up to a life lesson..I'm always warning my students to be careful with what they post on social media because employers will look at Facebook and Twitter pages

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the app is evil and should be destroyed. Nor am I saying that it wouldn't be fun to sort of ride along on an OV via Periscope. I'm just saying that the immediacy of the app can lead to unintended consequences.

It's like a chainsaw, which can be used productively (say, as a prop in a movie like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), but can also be used inappropriately (such as in an actual chainsaw massacre).

Yeah but you can say that about a lot of things..do guns make someone kill? is it the sports car that caused you to get a reckless driving ticket? If someone screws up its on them and not the app.
Here is another one of my fave scopers..think this guy is in Connecticut he does a lot of cool shots of old wooden covered bridges and this morning he found a nice waterfall

And Im not either. That fact is Im 48 & could care less what a bunch of kids do on Saturday night other than my own. I follow recruits on twitter because they want VolNation to show them some love. Its a respect thing. Now a couple of them are funny but I only view twitter for the instant news it provides. But if you have periscope (a sister site to twitter) then anytime someone you follow on twitter does a live broadcast then you instantly are notified. I don't generally pay attention but last night on a huge recruiting weekend for the Vols, damn straight Im going to watch some.
But non of this is the point which was periscope will ultimately become a nightmare for some of these kids in the future.

Periscope is about the dumbest thing ive ever seen. I feel that way personally, but, then I choose to avoid social media like the plague. (With the exception of Linkedin for work). I let my wife do all that socializing. Now, if this Periscope is utilized by the age range it waa created and developed for, so be it.

Periscope will directly lead to a P5 program getting smacked down hard by the NCAA within the next two years.

Twitter is bad enough, considering kids have tweeted pics of themselves holding wads of cash immediately after committing. At least there's the time lag of having to type the tweet, attach the photo, send it out, so the kid has a moment to think about what he's about to do or for an upperclassman to tell him not to click <Send>. With Periscope, it's going out live. These kids don't know all of the rules. Hell, half of all college coaches don't know all of them. While the videos can be fun to watch, I think it will lead to some program getting hammered in the near future.

What do you all think?

As media savvy as Butch is, I imagine he's developed a Periscope training program and implemented strict guidelines in its use. At least, I hope he has.

I absolutely agree. I believe someone said on here the other day while the players were using it CBJ directly told them not to.

We must be the same age, I've got the same exact outlook including exception of LinkedIn. I wrote a paper dealing with the subject to an extent when I was in grad school dealing with our societies over reliance on technology and the decaying of social skills and basic work and survival skills. That was way before social media and everytime I see a ball game and everyone is staring down at their phone I scream that I was unfortunately right. That said, I love me some VN, so am I a hypocrite? Lol

I think there is a difference between message boards and what is generally called social media.

Message boards tend to be about one topic and there is more of a back and forth participation in discussions.

While things like Facebbok, Twitter, Instagram etc just fuel the inherent narcissism in humans. It's a lot more "look at me" and "Like me". Traits that have always been there but now have a platform to showcase it.

Agree with this 100%, and not just for self serving reasoning.

Butch Jones and Tennessee football both have Periscope accounts

That wasn't my point. The Tennessee Football account and Butch Jones' account are not going to mistakenly video any inappropriate activity.

i tell ya, living in Asheville we saw it at its worst. an overly plugged in city, with young kids entitled bc of parents handing them money sayin 'go be independent'. No one can sit here and tell me that uploading of your own photos to earn 'likes' and achieve social status isnt a form of narcissism?! its at its very core. and only fuels the overlying social problems of today. try having a conversation with any millenial. it can be very difficult and taxing. lol, its even more difficult from a managerial perspective!

I agree with this and I'm a big user of social media
You might enjoy a series called Black Mirror, it focuses on the dangers of social media..warning it's very dark but well written

Off subject (go figure), you saying you live in Asheville makes me think of my recent visit there, making me think of Farmburger, which makes me drool, and now I'm starving. So good.

I don't get caught up in the generations thing. The greatest generation said the same things about the Boomers. The Boomers said the same things about Gen X... and so on.

I know plenty of people my age that spend waaaaay too much time on social media. If anything young people probably handle it better than older people because they are native to it.

For me personally, there is no hope of mastering the "latest thing" in social media and I'm so far behind the times, I'm a dinosaur. If I started Periscope today, by the time I figured it out, something new would have taken it's place. I did answer a text last year.hahaha.

anybody else remember in the 4th grade, getting to go outside to clean the erasers?

Ahhhh the smell of Chalk dust!

Ha, now that's funny! And, remember the bonding that took place between teacher and student in the smoking zone! This world is going to heck!

I'm still worried about that Y2K thing. I held out on direct deposit until I was made to accept it kicking and screaming. It's a control plot.

For those of you old enough to remember Twilight Zone lol.

Agreed. Let me reiterate, I'm not blaming Periscope itself. I'm not saying that it doesn't have value. I'm not saying it was created for nefarious purposes. I'm not saying it can't be useful or entertaining.

I'm simply predicting some kid will use it to broadcast something that directly leads to a major program getting sanctioned by the NCAA. And, I hope Butch has the reins tight enough that it won't be the UT program.

That already happened with UNC and Marvin Austin. Wouldn't be the first time.
