Peyton and his recruitment

It's speculated that he would have gone to Ole Miss had it not been heavily rumored that they were about to get hit with sanctions.

He mentions in the BOM that he was fully planning to follow Cooper to Ole Miss until he got hurt and they couldn't play together anymore. I've also read or seen somewhere about his in-home visit with Phil and Cut. Phil was in full form as "the closer" in those days and did most of the talking himself, but for Peyton's visit he quickly noticed that Peyton and Cut were connecting and got out of the way to let them do their thing.

I've followed the Vols as far back as Dewey Warren and Bobby Scott but the real 'good ole days' were with Peyton....we will never see a better quarterback or representative of the university than Peyton...

Agreed, but to me the Artful Dodger is a very close second. Loved to watch him, a true UT VFL.

Archie received death threats after Peyton signed with UT. That statement was made in the doc.

Don't point fingers, bud, UT fans threw stuff at Condredge's mom. That's about as low as you can get.
'Bout on level with what Auburn fans have done to the recruit who flipped to Bama. Fingers can be dangerous.

I can't begin to wrap my mind around the football destruction Peyton and the Ole Ball Coach would have wreaked upon the SEC together. Glad we got him.

Ole Danny Boy wasn't too shabby for the HBC back during that time, if I recall. They beat everyone else in the nation without Peyton, except Nebraska (but we didn't beat the Cornhuskers either).

Eli put out a top 5 that left off UT. He included Texas, LSU, Tulane, Ole Miss & Virginia. Remember reading the article in the paper one afternoon. The recruiting coverage is nothing like it used to be.

Peyton was truly special, and will always be a special representative of all things UT. I met him at the Birmingham Touchdown Club following his senior year, and Archie and Cut. But don't forget Condredge Holloway. He is a true Vol for life, an Alabama boy who chose the vols over the bear! Ad there are many other special people who have worn the orange and represented the University well. We've got some of them coming in this summer! Go Vols!

A lot of people forget that Peyton's decision pretty-much came down to Tennessee & Florida! WHEW!!

I listened to Archie on a radio show a few months back. He said that Peyton narrowed it down to Tennessee and Kansas State. Peyton liked what Bill Snyder was doing there and thought they were building something great. I think it's amazing he was able to identify two programs on the rise for that period of time.

I didn't know he was that good in H.S.

He was the number 1 rated QB out of HS. The #2 guy was Donovan Mcnabb and the #3 QB was a guy who signed with PSU but broke his neck at the beach a few days after graduating HS and is still in a wheelchair today (but he is a successful lawyer now)

Thats the only story I got

We all know the story of his official visit here and it was snowing in the dead of winter. Besides Ole Miss, who did he have offers from? Also, was there any chance of Eli coming here?

He was considering Florida, Michigan, Tennessee & Ole Miss. That was what he said in an interview.....

Seems that Brandon Stewart was ranked ahead by the recruiting services of that time/era. I remember their freshman year actually thinking he was better and thought Archie pulled strings. Now though, Peyton ended up being Tennessee football.

I felt the same thing. Particularly in that Bama game I thought Stewart outplayed Manning in that game and I remember being angry when they let Manning lead that final drive and he misfired in the endzone. Stewart had also reminded me of Shuler (my fav QB).

Before you flame me I was 12 years old. I just remember that one because it was my first UT Bama game and I got to watch it from the luxury box.

then I'm pretty sure that's not correct. I believe Booty was the #1 QB coming out of HS but went baseball. McNabb wasn't a very highly recruited player

he was offered by Nebraska the year they won a NC, and played basketball at Cuse. Id say thats highly recruited. The exact numbers may be off

Interestingly, BlueChip Illustrated named Stewart to its All-American team, but ranked him as only the No. 5 quarterback in the Southwest Region (Manning was ranked No. 2 in the *nation* by the same publication). So it may have been a Worley-like situation: stellar senior season, but college coaches may have had some concerns.

True...but remember Spurrier those days didn't cotton to his QBs taking much charge (or getting too much credit)in HIS offense...even the perfect QB in the OBC's system...Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel, had to be taken down a peg...today's Spurrier would've been a better fit.

Who's pointing fingers "bud"? Archie revealed the death threats to emphasize the extremes fanatical fans will go to. The Holloway incident was years ago and I wonder what Vol fans think about being called "low".

What he was probably asserting is that the NUTJOBS that are in every fanbase shouldn't define said fanbase...I have friends who are (and have ALWAYS been) diehard Bama fans...as good and openhearted people I've ever met...we have fun on here poking other fans...but perspective people...perspective:hi:
