Correct, Eli used to sign UT bound on autographs in HS. the family was so impressed by the way Payton developed under Cutcliffe that Eli would have gone wherever he was.

I remember watching a piece on Peyton before he committed to UT (probably at halftime of a game) where Peyton showed the camera crews the closet where he kept all the letters he had gotten from various programs. They were filed away by school. EVERY major program in the nation had a folder. I even remember thinking the folder from UT wasn't as thick as the others. He could have gone anywhere.

As for Brandon Stewart he split time with Peyton all the way through the bowl game but by the last few games it was obvious Peyton would be the long-term starter. If I remember correctly Fulmer even said the competition for the starting job would be open in the spring.

Early on as a freshman I thought Stewart looked pretty good compared to Manning when he could take the snap. I've never seen a QB fumble so many snaps in my life though which did him in.

Granted, it's been over 20 years so I could have imagined most of this post.

I think Peyton flat said, if Cooper had still been playing he would've went to Ole Miss. It really was a perfect storm of bad things that got him to UT.

He did say in the Manning ESPN show that he "probably" would have gone to Ole Miss IF Cooper had still been playing which absolutely would have made a difference. But with that off the table he was free to go where HE felt was best. He also said if Archie had insisted he go to Ole Miss he would have.... but the opportunity (obviously looking back now) was much brighter for him at UT at that time and like everything Peyton does the decision was WELL THOUGHT OUT......

Who's pointing fingers "bud"? Archie revealed the death threats to emphasize the extremes fanatical fans will go to. The Holloway incident was years ago and I wonder what Vol fans think about being called "low".

Im not your bud, pal

It's speculated that he would have gone to Ole Miss had it not been heavily rumored that they were about to get hit with sanctions.

I think I remember in the Book of Manning that Peyton said if Cooper had not gotten injured and had to quit playing, he would have followed him to Ole Miss.
