Phil Steele: Most improved teams in 2014

In his season predictions for each team he starts out by telling us what the team did 10 years or so ago. It gets really annoying to read at times.

I can totally see where his magazine has some value. That is, for anyone who is doing historical work such as announcers or similar. If I had to guess, I would say roughly 2/3 of the rest is either self aggrandizing BS, or adverts for other parts of his services. The rest of it, insofar as what is useful this year, could be boiled down to both sides of a legal piece of paper.

Have you made predictions for this season based on recruiting rankings? What is our predicted record in that regard?

Dooley2, since he has temporarily logged out, I will tell you that daj2576's short answer to your question is 8-4. That is based on sliding 4-year recruiting averages as a gauge of relative talent. For the long answer, see the far left column of this spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/a/umail.iu....Pix10mXVhg6lEOdU8NNvYUVVZq07lJvw8KrA0/pubhtml) and this thread for further discussion (http://www.volnation.com/forum/tenn...ack-professional-predictions-vols-2014-a.html).

Phil Steele produces a weekly tip sheet and I think his magazine is a derivative of all the stats he puts together for the sheets......a by-product if you will. Mind numbing if you try to read it cover to cover. He has more info than any other mag and it works better as a reference during the season.

Wow. Someone else believes...

NCAAF Most improved teams for 2014 - ESPN

8. TENNESSEE
In the past three years, the Volunteers are 4-20 in SEC play. This year's squad has much more experience at the skill positions than last year but remarkably has zero returning starters on the offensive and defensive lines. While they play my No. 2 toughest schedule in the country, those inexperienced lines will have more experience come November, when, if they sweep the likes of Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt in their final three games, they will be bowling for the first time since 2010.

Wins over UF, Kentucky, Mizzou, and Vandy are very possible this season. 4-4 in the SEC would get UT to a bowl game in Florida, possibly the Gator. It could happen.

Steele has been predicting our comeback for a couple of years now. I guess he will be right eventually.

For me personally, there is no other preseason college football magazine that even comes close to providing the information that his does. Yes he gives you a lot of historical information but he also has gives very accurate and detailed information on current rosters for EVERY team in the FBS. I'm also a long time college fantasy football junkie so it's an invaluable resource for preparing for the upcoming season. I've gotten his preseason magazine for some 15 years and I keep every one of them. Seeing his magazine on the stands means the college football season is getting close!
