Phrases/Cliches that annoy you.

Resiliency.

That's not at all a knock on Butch Jones, as I know he uses it a lot, but the use of resiliency instead of resilience just grates on my nerves a little bit. I know it's perfectly acceptable from a usage standpoint but it just has a kind of sporty pretentiousness to it, to where you hear it used more by sportscasters and coaches than anywhere else. It seems to be one of those words that's lengthened out of a sense of pompous verbosity.

lol
Said the guy who's b****ing about pompous verbosity. Yeah, I know.

Suspension of Disbelief

It annoys me when that is a answer given for why in the movie Batman and Robin vast persons don't recognize that Bruce Wayne and Batman are the same person because he never modified his voice, also Commissioner Gordon and others heard Bruce Wayne and Batman talk, and no 1 deciding to say Bruce Wayne is Batman your voice is the exact same is extremely implausible.

Certain things in fiction require a sensible explanation, and suspension of disbelief is a cop out answer to avoid giving a sensible explanation when 1 is warranted.

It's a movie. It isn't real. It's OK.

It's not as egregious as Superman, who is rendered unrecognizable by putting on a pair of glasses.

We always have to suspend our disbelief to some degree to step into the world of the story being told but the storyteller has to give you enough to work with to make it easy to do. If the internal logic of the story is set up well, you can, say, watch E.T. and the kids fly across the moon on their bicycles and just go with it (why are they pedaling anyway? what happens if they stop?).

But if they start disregarding even simple logic or physics it stands out and takes our minds out of the story. Like, if a guy shoots someone with a large gun and the victim flies off to the side or straight up into the air instead of straight backward away from the blast, then you're probably watching a John Woo film (especially if the flight is in slow motion).

"By God"

Seems almost always to be spoken by puffed up, aggressive mouth-breathers.

So does "cool story bro" and "bless your heart" is supposed to be some kind of insult I guess but it sounds stupid.

The one I hate most is "your under arrest".
