Pickett Opts Out of Peach Bowl

Honestly, you know there's an awful lot of sentiment here that treats playing for the team like being a Marine. Loyalty, selflessness....to the death.

You also seem reasonable enough to realize, especially now, that for lots of players (and most get disappointed) playing D1 ball is a step toward playing pro ball.

VFL takes a hit in that. A guy with "potential Sunday talent" needs to do what is best to get him to Sunday, as he sees it, whether that means transfer, get a big NIL deal, sit out a bowl, whatever.

It really is a business decision from HS on now and we need to respect guys making the decisions for themselves and their families and appreciate their work for the Vols while they're here.
Nah...
I'm a FAN. My money paid for his education!

The least that selfish PRE- 💃 can do is play the sport he was given a scholarship for.
Friggin cookie monster my a$$!!🤨😳

Get out there a play now, I say!! Git on out thee!!

It's a business decision, though, good or bad.

The fact he was a Heisman finalist says he already HAS shown his talent sufficiently. His call.
I guessing the NFL powers think very little of guys who quit on their team before the season ends. It indicates a player may not buy into the team concept and unity most coaches/mgt would like to see and may be a character issue. Just my opinion.

BS. Kenny Pickett came back and struggled with a very serious ankle injury.

Why is it so hard to let a business decision be a business decision for these guys?

Fan interest is the foundation under that revenue stream (obviously). How did you miss that? Fan opinion is the only asset they have. Nothing can change that.

Again, BS. Some kids opting out of non-CFP bowls BECAUSE they've played good enough for the team to potentially go to the NFL is GOOD for the team reputation, not bad.

We revel in Vols who make it to Sunday and will continue to do so whether they play in the Music City Bowl or not.

That’s one. I still believe what I posted.
Here’s a list of guys who have opted out of bowl season the past three years that went on to be first or second round picks:

Terrell Lewis
Trevon Diggs
Andrew Thomas
Brandon Aiyuk
Cam Akers
AJ Dillon
CJ Henderson
N’Keal Harry
Ed Oliver
Kyle Pitts
Kadarius Toney

I don’t think many NFL teams give a damn about a guy skipping a meaningless bowl game. Now if someone opts out of a playoff game, which will happen sooner or later, that might be a different story.

Didn’t really hurt Nick Bosa, who opted out for the rest of the SEASON after his injury healed. When you’re good, they rationalize.

And both Bosa brothers are still highly regarded at Ohio State.

It's total BS to assume fans are not smart enough to understand the game is a business now.

Jamaar chase quit on the WHOLE season last year and still got drafted 5th overall. If you're good it doesn't matter if you don't play a meaningless bowl game or even play an entire season evidently
In that particular case, COVID was a easy excuse out of fan repercussion. Penei Sewell also, tho when he made his decision it was doubtful the Pac 12 was playing a season.

I think chase used covid as an excuse to opt out cause he seen they were going to suck. He practiced right up until it was time to play the games I believe.

Agreed. There was an almost instant letdown when Brady and Aranda moved on.

I don’t consider bowl games meaningless for the teams, okayers and fans involved. If it is then why would any player choose to play?

No effect on our program? If we win doesn’t it influence our final year-end rankings and provides an opportunity to help recruiting ? If you are correct that means “No
Games (win or lose) will matter.
We're ranked about 40, Purdue is ranked about 31.

It's not like we're going to move the needle with this bowl game for a recruit.

It certainly can and a bowl may help with recruiting and outlook regarding Heupel’s and the program especially if it is a convincing win. This game means a lot for the program.
