Pig Howard's role next season

Just hope we don't see him in that "reverse" play that the world sees coming. Hope to see him on the field a lot in the slot. Short of the ?fumble?, you don't see him dropping any good passes, and after he gets the ball, he drives the ball as if his life depends on it. He's tough as nails,no doubt....and can't recall any injuries as of yet.

Pig was one of our only bright spots this yr I dont think he will lose his spot. He is to good of a player

He was a rare bright spot on a very poor WR corps. With the arrival of Malone and Pearson, I think his role will be diminished. Only a matter to what extent IMO.

He's a good solid player, gives his all and is talented and a great kid. Think he can contribute a lot especially with more options at WR around him.

Still a little bitter over his block in the back which negated what should've been the game winning TD vs Vandy though.

I was bitter as well till i watched the play several times slow on the dvr, then got more confused about the call. It is what it is.

Yep. If he'll just take one of those ridiculous "pig sweep" reverses to the house from 50+ yds after breaking 8 or more tackles as the clock runs out against Florida next year to win the game, I'll forgive him.

Hey let me ask. Since you saw the play again, would the player that he clipped have tackled Dobbs had Pig not blocked him? Another poster claimed that was the case and that Dobbs wouldn't have scored had Pig not blocked him in the back so we shouldn't even blame Pig for that. I remember thinking at the time that the block was unnecessary and Pig should've never touched the guy.

What do you think after watching it again?

This is a very good take IMO. If Malone and Pearson are what we believe and need them to be, them Pig will see some of his playing time and by default, touches diminish. Should still be in the slot rotation. He's solid but not elite, not a game breaker like Malone and Pearson are touted to be.

The thought of Croom being moved to TE is silly. He's not nearly as physical as he needs to be at WR.

Croom is a redshirt give him time.

Alton would have been "elite" & a "playmaker" if we had consistent Qb play.

Even with all of the talent coming at receiver, Pig will not suffer because he has the most experience and has shown he has play making ability. Pig could benefit even if the new comers make an impact on day one because teams will not have focus mainly on North and Pig.

I think Pig is all vol. I'm not questioning his heart. What I'm wondering is do you think he will play less next year? If our recruits sign on I see Pig's time being cut.

No....he is the best slot WR on the roster. He is very talented

I think we will play the same amount if not more, but I think he will get less targets due to talent around him, and I doubt we will do as many pig sweeps.

We was the best Slot WR on the 2013 roster, yes. He is very talented, yes. But the players he will be competing for time with at WR next year will be significantly better that who he competed against last year. Von Pearson and Josh Malone weren't on the 2013 roster.....they will on the 2014.

Add Wharton and Jenkins. Just as fast and elusive.

Pig played well against SEC talent. The recruits coming in do not have that experience. I believe that Pig had the most receptions last year. He and North are the best options until we see more from other players.

I agree with less 'Pig' sweeps. IMO it needs to be replaced with more QB keepers in the read option.

Hopefully more so. Pig had 44 catches for less than 400 yds and 3 yds. Given our QB situation and our, on the whole, awful WR corps surrounding Pig that wasn't too bad. But I don't recall too many big plays by Pig.... don't recall too many dynamic plays where he embarrassed anybody's defense. The wheel route td catch vs Florida and a couple or 3 impressive plays vs Georgia is about all I remember. He's a good player, but he could be pretty easily replaced IMO.

He will still be the best slot WR. Malone and Pearson are primarily outside guys. They may rotate a little at slot but Pig isn't some walk on that needs upgraded. The dude is a playmaker.

I think he probably moves to the DL' since Lambert bailed! Maybe Lambert was affraid Pig would hurt him if he came to TN! JMO On the other hand, I thought Devrin had better hands than Pig!:good!:

I could be wrong. But I gotta feeling that our 3 most talented WRs, outside or slot, on the team next year, will be North, Malone and Pearson. I would also bet that those are the 3 that will be on the field the majority of the time. Not saying that Pig and I guess Croom, hopefully a Johnson or Jenkins or Wharton (dear GOD please no Josh Smith) won't get a lot of snaps and be consistently in the rotation. Just that UT should get their 3 most talented WR playmakers on the field as much as possible. With the addition of Pearson and Malone IMO, Pig is now the 4th.

Cause some folks have garbage for brains, that's why their posts reek of methane.

Common sense folks would have waited until this game experienced receiver went up against the new talent in spring and summer preparations to ask that question. Instead of looking at the ingredients for blueberry and blackberry pie, and asking which will taste better. Darn things hadn't even been baked yet and they ask that? Yep, it's VN, I suppose.

So the OP isn't allowed to speculate or ask anyone's opinion on a matter before it plays out?

Jones says the slot receiver should have 100 catches in his offense. Pig will have a chance to really shine next year.

His roll will be to help us win

So if there is one roll left in the basket who takes it?
I bet Dobbs would snag it, throw it to Josh Smith, but it would bounce off his forehead. Pig then comes flying in to catch the roll and then fumbles it inches from his mouth.

.....after committing a penalty just prior that was inconsequential to the play that called the whole damn thing back.

Pig did improve this year--but if he's our best in the slot next year then we are gonna be in trouble, that's hard to say and it's JMO. I would like to see our slot guy be a danger to take it to the house every time he touches the ball, and Pig is not that kind of player. He's not a Stallworth type of guy, and we need the slot receiver to be like that.

I would think Malone or Pearson will end up spending a lot of time in the slot--don't know which will end up there, but I expect both to learn the position.

Some on here think that Croom is not physical enough to play TE. You may be right, but Croom is a weapon who needs to be utilized. If he can get faster--then maybe he could start at a WR opposite North--and both Malone and Pearson could learn the slot--or Malone could split time at WR behind North or Croom.

I would still like to see Croom line up in the TE position and run some seam routes or patterns down the middle of the field between the safeties--He's a huge target who has the height to catch the ball above LBs, and has the size to be a mismatch with most safeties.

I would not rule out seeing Pig get more playing time next year at RB--especially in certain 3rd down situations. He'd be a mismatch on any LB attempting to cover him. And we do not have the depth at the position necessary for the SEC...

Just my 0.02....and that's about all it's worth...GO VOLS! :salute:

really--a playmaker--just trying to be realistic here.

I know that Pig made some plays--most good, but did he really display the ability to be a game-changer? He had a VERY good UGA game, but other than that (and the penalty against Candy)--can you name some big plays Pig was involved in that changed the game?

Is Pig a danger to take any ball he catches to the house? Does Pig strike fear in the hearts of SEC defenses with his speed and play-making ability?

I think the answer to these last 2 questions is a resounding NO...

I hope that Malone and Pearson do see time in the slot next year, especially Pearson. If we need a guy to catch 100 balls in the slot--I want it to be Pearson first, and Malone 2nd. :salute:
