Play Calling Grades

Let's be real. the OL wasn't giving him a ton of time to let those downfield routes develop. Milton wasn't accurate and at times, the WR's dropped balls and Keyton fumbled. What magical play call do you suggest?
Exactly. Excellent analysis.
I baffles me how many on here are obvious to reality.
If a play didn’t work it was a bad call, could hit a guy 40 yards down field in the end zone with no defense in 20 yards and it’s dropped and it would be a bad call.
Sometimes teams play bad. Sometimes it’s just the Qb, or WR or OL.
Tonight it was all of the above . Come out flat most likely looking ahead to next week.
Could be we’re not good enough to do that and play up to par.

For crying out loud! This is asinine!

No doubt.

I don’t care how ingenious a play call me be…if the players don’t execute it then it will fail.

Here’s another thing. You shouldn’t have to make great play calls against AP. If UT’s offense had executed just a little, it would be a bigger score.

The execution on offense tonight was abysmal, and it carried over to all position groups. Penalties, dropped balls, fumbles, inconsistent line play, etc.

Well, he forgot how to do it apparently.
I don’t know how anyone could question play calling after this game. If your QB can’t complete a pass to the middle of the field and your WRs can’t catch, what are you supposed to do? Our guys found a way to score 30 points despite being severely limited at QB. That’s good.

You must not be reading the posts. I ain't taking it hard, I just think some on here are fickle to the Nth degree. The only way to make me stop calling the LOTM what they are is to ignore me.
Nope. You know where that button is too.

Tennessee play calling tonight was horrible. Joe and the receivers were off early, yet we kept passing vs utilizing 3 amazing running backs and a pretty decent O line. The incomplete passes also thwarted just about any and all momentum down the field - as it stopped the clock and allowed (who did we play again?) to rest and set their defensive alignments.

The other team was spot on with their play calling. It is if they studied our defense and knew what plays to call against us. Imagine that?

Other Team Play Calling A-

Yes our execution was off but, make adjustments and not later, but immediately. Very, very hard game to watch and cannot put all the blame on the players.
I find it hilarious that you think today's game has any influence over the upcoming games.

Unfortunately, I think this is the first time this coaching staff actually completely took a team for granted. Hopefully it will be the last.

Shouldn’t really need top tier play calling to dominate Austin Peay though, with the talent difference if we execute it’s not close.

The only thing I would say to all the complaints about playcalling is to go back and watch the one series Tennessee had when Austin Peay got it within 10 at 13-23. As soon as AP scored that touchdown, Tennessee ran a four play drive that had Milton uncork a pass over the middle, something we didn't see at all during the rest of the game, and then a well designed big bomb to the tight end for a touchdown.

I'm not a fan of the "they're holding things back for an advantage" arguments, especially after 17 years of that with Fulmer every season before the Florida game, but the posture and playcalling shifted gears for that one drive. Tennessee scored in less than a minute, and then went back into its shell. I do not know why. I do not claim to know why. But I thought that was a very, very interesting little series there. It felt intentional.

With that in mind, I would say, with some trepidation, that we should wait to see how UT handles Florida and Scarolina before the jury returns a verdict on the playcalling quality this season. I don't know what they're up to but we may see something a bit different next week in Gainesville.

That's exactly what I've been saying all night. Looks like you're the LOTM now.

People seem really offended by the screens generally working just because they prefer throws downfield

yall are stuck on the playcalling lol.

You are aware that Milton started the game like 1/11, right? They changed the playcalling because Joe couldn't complete any vertical passes tonight.

No, see the difference is, I understand why the game went like it did. You guys act like this has been the way this staff has been all along. If they beat Florida next weekend, then the team was always awesome. I don't enjoy poor execution by the team, but I like fair weather fans even less. I ain't miserable, just irritated by chicken little fans. You guys have had your glory days for the previous 15 years, it is time for you to give it a rest.

They actually didn't throw any vertical passes today.

Not showing anything. I'm not worried. We didn't throw a single deep ball. We worked on under routes. We needed the work as you can see. Good job huep.

I'll be really concerned about the rest of our season if our O-Line wasn't able to hold back Austin Peay. If they can't give him time against them, SEC teams are going to beat the snap to the backfield.

I think Joe had plenty of time in the pocket. Was only sacked once on a blitz.

Something was off after the run where he wasn’t really hit but fell awkwardly on his shoulder.

I guess we find out next week if this team and offense can catch fire.

I’m pretty certain we were trying to get through this game with as little shown as possible. Still a **** job in terms of our guy’s execution

Plays have to be executed properly to be successful.
Several were not tonight.
Coaches can put players in position to make plays but the players have to properly execute those plays……..
Play on player!!!!!

Our play-calling against UVA was vanilla. Against AP, it was more vanilla than vanilla extract.

I’m thinking and hoping this is the plan leading into Gainesville and SEC play.

I feel like with them playing 2 really bad teams, Heup has tried to force the passing game to get going because he knows he can get away with it. Don't see him doing so against Florida.

Definitely not the first.

They're good for at least one big over-look a season.

Remember SCAR last year?

I am not sure that one was an oversight. That was a total breakdown of the entire team from top to bottom. Last night seemed to be an intentional alteration of the game plan. There are two series in the second half that make me feel that way. They had the same flow, formations and tempo we are used to. On the first drive we drove 75 yards in less than 2 minutes. The second took less than 1 minute. Same QB, RB, HC but normal play. Went right back to the disjointed game plan after. Same team, different schemes, different result. Amazingly, with all that chaos, we still won.

Protection was iffy. Milton was off. Receivers were dropping balls and Keyton fumbled one. Running the ball and those sideline balls were the only things working. What would you expect a play caller to do?

All good points. Which begs the question, if this is what we get against lowly AP in terms of effort and performance, then what is the issue and how can it be fixed? Is it temporary or systemic?

If the coaches didn’t have them prepared or mentally ready, then how can that be prevented from happening again?

The team looked completely zapped of energy from the get-go. Coaching seemed stuck right there with them. I love Heupel, but last night was uncharacteristic of what we have seen during this tenure(granted,SCAR coming very close).
