Play Calling Grades

Let's be real. the OL wasn't giving him a ton of time to let those downfield routes develop. Milton wasn't accurate and at times, the WR's dropped balls and Keyton fumbled. What magical play call do you suggest?

OK CAVPUT, appreciate you asking my thoughts on play calling. Perhaps my idea of winning a game is different than everyone else's, but if I was calling the Offensive plays, this would be my MO:

1. First downs, not touchdowns. If you focus on gaining 10 yards every 3 plays, you will control the ball, keep the other team off the field, rest your D and eventually score all the points you need
2. Utilize your strengths. Ours is our good O line and 3 running backs. We can run against anyone.
3. Keep the ball moving quickly. This is our #1 offensive weapon under CJH. Incomplete passes take the air out of our #1 strength so, don't let them happen early in the game. Short, reliable passes - which we do well
4. Utilize the talent of our WRs. They are hard to pull down one on one, so chances are good that each short pass will get us 3-5 yards almost every time, if not more.
4A. Short passes will build up the confidence of your QB and your WRs, so that when they air it out, we increase our chances of completions.
5. Once we have established dominance, as in points on the board and time of possession, then we can open the game up a bit

Look back at Peyton and Brady's careers. They were masters of the short game. Keep the chains moving. The razzle dazzle was icing on the cake.

I don’t care how ingenious a play call me be…if the players don’t execute it then it will fail.

Here’s another thing. You shouldn’t have to make great play calls against AP. If UT’s offense had executed just a little, it would be a bigger score.

The execution on offense tonight was abysmal, and it carried over to all position groups. Penalties, dropped balls, fumbles, inconsistent line play, etc.
