Seems like most polls are putting TN at 5th with an impending season-ending MI at Ohio St dropping one of them out of the big four. That likely means the national semifinal will be TCU vs Ohio State and TN vs GA.
Who follows No. 1 Georgia after three of top six lose? Our college football coaches poll prediction
Anyone think GA is looking forward to a TN rematch? I definitely don't.
Sure, we sucked in the first half. But, the 2nd half was a different story. GA's possessions were field goal, fumble, punt and punt. TN's were fumble, loss on downs, 61-yard touchdown drive and loss on downs.
GA gambled that their secondary could cover our receivers long enough for an intense rush to either sack Hendon or rush him. No long gorgeous bombs to Hyatt or Tillman. It worked - sort of. Several times they were open but Hendon either overthrew them or was running for his life.
But, in a rematch, I believe TN's coaches will dissect this film and have the Vols more than ready. We have the best, smartest coaches in the conference. Period. They'll see:
- The flat was open all day. Wright and Small flaring out for quick, wide open passes in empty space will be there ALL DAY. GA will then be forced to pull somebody out of the pass rush to cover or go to zone to cover our receivers. Either option cooks GA.
- If Hendon drops back a little further, he'll have more time and a different angle from which to throw.
That's just some of what I saw, and our coaches are 1,000 times smarter than I am.
And, look at the halftime defensive adjustments. In the 2nd half, Georgia:
- had 67 yrds and a field goal
- 3 yrds and a fumble
- 6 yrds and a punt
- 2 yrds and a punt
- 12 yrds and time ran out
They were SHUT DOWN.
On the day, Bennett hit 70% of his passes for 257 yards. Hooker hit 70% of his passes for 195 yards. TN ran for 94 yards (2.2 avg), and GA ran for 130 yards (3.5 avg).
The game looked like a blowout because of the 1st half and TN's inability to explode on offense. But, this was not a blowout. In the 2nd half, if a couple of passes were hit, we would have been 20-27 AND the defense had figured GA out. Imagine how many Dawg sphincters would have been tightened then.
So ... Win out convincingly and the Vols are in. And, GA's in for a very long, sad afternoon.
