Playoff System Needed.

Like it will be any better with a playoff? Listen, no matter what system is in place, somebody is going to get screwed, some time, somehow. Yes, it happened to Auburn. Everybody was asked to toss in their opinion, and that's what they came up with.

I know SEC fans, and Auburn fans in particular are going to be very vocal for a very long time about 2004, but you gotta let it go. There were three undefeated teams. The "plus one" idea would have worked that season, but that would also set the precedent of flying by the seat of your pants in determining a national champion, because somebody might get jobbed.

This year will really be a mess if USC,and SEC team and Big 10 team goes undefeated.Flip a coin?

Better to leave the 17th team in the cold rather than the 3rd.

The Big Ten team gets in automatically... I'm making the assumption it will be Ohio State or Michigan. tOSU would be undefeated w/ wins over Texas and Michigan, and Michigan would be undefeated w/ wins over Notre Dame and Ohio State. Both play an otherwise reasonable non-conference schedule.

USC will have wins over (probable Big XII North, and maybe Big XII champions) Nebraska, Oregon and Notre Dame. Tough to turn that down.

Auburn's schedule is about the same as USC's. LSU, Florida and Georgia are the toughies, but they get all of them at home. Auburn also goes on the road just four times this season, to Mississippi State, South Carolina, Ole Miss and Alabama. Not exactly a gauntlet challenge.

Georgia has three tough games, two of which are on the road... The rest is junk (except maybe Georgia Tech). vs. Tennessee, Florida (neutral), at Auburn. Meh.

Florida probably has the toughest schedule, with LSU and Georgia at home, and Tennessee, Auburn and FSU on the road.

Other teams that could go undefeated... So my scheduling pecking order of undefeated teams with reasonable shots at making the national title is as follows:

1. Florida
2. Ohio State
3. Michigan
4. Georgia
5. USC
6. Auburn
7. Virginia Tech
8. West Virginia

EDIT: Georgia probably won't go undefeated. I put them in there because... Well, I don't know why. But I'm still right.

Milo, get Georgia out of your head. It ain't gonna happen.

Yeah. I didn't even have Georgia in there to begin with...

But, I'm talking about strength of schedule. So, there. look at the post

I don't know. I don't see them going undefeated. They barely stopped LSU on that last drive, JaMarcus Russell was picking them apart.

They had some crazy talent in '04. Jason Campbell and one of the best runningback duos in recent history.

You might as well add an asterisk next to Ohio State and Michigan. One of those two will not make the national championship.

USC is a lock if they can get by Notre Dame, and judging by the beating administered by Michigan, it may not be too difficult.

I would probably go with...

1. OSU/Michigan winner
2. USC
3. Auburn (defense wins games, but it doesn't impress a nation that loves high-powered offenses)
4. Louisville

I was rating strength of schedule... But oh well. I probably agree with your guess as to most likely to make the national title. But, like I said, they suffer from an unimpressive schedule like in '04. All their tough SEC games (they lucked out on the East rotation this season) are at home. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that they will handle Alabama this season.

I think they could run the table... the thing is, winning games by 10 points or less doesn't look as good as OSU or USC beating someone by 35.

Personally, I have more fun watching teams built around defense.

Edit: Sorry about that... didn't catch the original part about SOS. :)

I think most poll-voters are savvy enough to realize the strength of most SEC teams as of late is the defensive strength and speed. The key for Auburn this season is that The Citadel isn't on their schedule.

Even if there was a tournament, we probably wouldn't make it in. There'll probably be a lot of teams with 1 and 2 losses at the end of the year. The Vols traditionally don't seem to be ranked favorably to teams with the same record. There would probably be 8 teams getting in, with us on the outside, raising hell about how stupid the system is.

Assuming we do well for the rest of the season (i.e. win out). If Florida wins the division and Cal finishes top 3 in the Pac-10, our ranking will be fine.

I've thought that before, but then again I'll see Va Tech ranked higher than us with an identical record. It happens pretty frequently. I highly doubt we'll win out the rest of the season. If we do, we'll probably go to the SEC championship. If we win that, then obviously we'll be a top 8 team. I'm pretty concerned about playing LSU, though. They are better than Florida and will be out for revenge.

Same record? VaTech is 3-0, we're 2-1...

In fact, the Hokies are slowly becoming a sleeper national championship game pick for me, given that the ACC continues to look worse every week. I don't think the country has quite caught on to exactly how bad the ACC is, and their image can only go up now that conference play is starting.

I say you shorten the season by 1 game.

Still use the polls, and the BCS.

Take the top 16 teams in the BCS and raise hell.

Lower Seeded Team plays at home:
1 plays 16 (Game 1)
2 plays 15 (Game 2)
3 plays 14 (Game 3)
4 plays 13 (Game 4)
5 plays 12 (Game 5)
6 plays 11 (Game 6)
7 plays 10 (Game 7)
8 plays 9 (Game 8)

Game 1 Winner vs. Game 8 Winner (@ Chick-Fil-A Bowl) (Game 9)
Game 2 Winner vs. Game 7 Winner (@ Fiesta Bowl) (Game 10)
Game 3 Winner vs. Game 6 Winner (@ Capital One Bowl) (Game 11)
Game 4 Winner vs. Game 5 Winner (@ Outback Bowl) (Game 12)

Game 9 W vs. Game 12 W (@ Sugar Bowl) (Game 13)
Game 10 W vs. Game 11 W (@ Orange Bowl) (Game 14)

National Title Game:

Game 13 Winner vs. Game 14 Winner (@ Rose Bowl) (Game 15)

Of course you can move the Bowls around to keep everyone happy.

I believe more people would watch as thats 15 games that mean EVERTHING instead of 1 that means EVERYTHING. But you know this would be WAY to simple. I know I would watch most to all
these games.

For the remaining teams that arent in the top 16, let them play bowl. Like a NIT for football.

This has the potentional to make mad money.

But again its to damn simple. Please feel free to add your thoughts on this and if you would watch and possible down falls of this system.

Tech's new QB is going to have to figure out how to play against the big defenses first.

vs. what big defenses?

The remainder of VaTech's schedule:

vs Cincinnati
vs Georgia Tech
at Boston College
vs Southern Miss
vs Clemson
at Miami
vs Kent State
at Wake Forest
vs Virginia

Remaining tough defenses... Miami? Maybe?

Still devalues the regular season too much. Also, the 16 spots are once again subjective. Instead of 1 team complaining, you will have 15 complaining about getting a bad draw and another 5-10 complaining abot getting left out...

If a playoff only had 8 teams it wouldn't devalue the regular season. Everyone has their opinion, here's mine:

Shorten the regular season back to 11 games.

Make EVERY conference play a title game. I don't care how you do this but make it happen. Split each conference into two divisions. Since the BIG 10 already has 11 teams, add a 12th. The Pac-10 can add two or split it into two five team divisions, same goes for other conferences.

Take the top 8 teams, by BCS rankings, and put them into the National Playoff system. Let's be honest here - looking at the way things are RIGHT NOW would any of us be highly upset if Tennessee were hovering around that 8th spot and missed it? The only way that could happen is for us to be a two loss team, at which point we wouldn't deserve a NC anyway. This year there could easily be 4 teams go undefeated - and then what? It's not fair at all to two teams who HAVE in fact done everything they needed to do. Some here are saying the regular season is the playoff - name any other playoff format where a team goes undefeated and gets a hearty pat on the back and handshake for a job well done while watching two other teams battle for a National Championship.

There will always be complaining about the system but honestly a playoff system would be better than what we have now and AT LEAST guarantee the undefeated teams a shot at the dang National Championship. 8 teams isn't overkill - I'll even admit 16 is overkill.

You fuse those 8 teams into the traditional bowl system and let the other bowls still run their games with teams that are 6-6 playing each other if they want to.

You can rotate the bowl schedules like you do now with the big 4 being the Fiesta, Rose, Sugar, and Orange.

This leaves room for 3 more big time playoff bowls - Cotton, Capital One, and Outback/Gator/Peach - one of those three.

It's so simple it would work - the bowls would still be played, the conferences would still make money, TV would pony up billions to have the rights to the playoffs. One of these days it will happen, but probably not soon.

I can't see Michigan leap frogging an undefeated Auburn team. The only team that's a lock to me is undefeated OSU.I still think USC will struggle with Cal just like last year.
