Playoff System Needed.

We do have a playoff.....we are in it right now! Eheheheheheh!

EXACTLY!!! The regular season is the playoff. This system has worked for many many years. It wouldn't even hurt my feelings and got rid of the BCS and went back to how it was pre-1998.

Word.

I used to be one that thought a playoff in college football would be super neat-o... but I hate the idea more and more everytime I hear about it. There already IS a playoff of sorts.

vs. what big defenses?

The remainder of VaTech's schedule:

vs Cincinnati
vs Georgia Tech
at Boston College
vs Southern Miss
vs Clemson
at Miami
vs Kent State
at Wake Forest
vs Virginia

Remaining tough defenses... Miami? Maybe?
they won't go undefeated...Miami always gets up for VT, don't know that it will help, but i can't see Miami just getting trounced in every game, they'll win a game here and there....Clemson is pretty good, and GT and WF, yes WF, wil be tough games for htem...

and the ACC is not very good this year, the strength of schedule alone would keep them out. the only shot they would have is to be the ONLY undefeated team at the end of the season....

People would still call for Fulmer's head because he's 0-2 against Urban Meyer.
maybe, but they'd be in the minority. 11-1 off of a 5-6 year, those are coach of the year numbers....but it ain't happening, so i'm not too concerned about it.

yep...a play off would just make the regular season, well, regular. that is if you just take the top 8 teams in the polls...#9 would always have a reason to bitch and moan. i don't think it's fair that the NC is decied by a computer and voters either, but in the end, the best part about college football is that ever game matters. there are no off weeks, you get caught sleeping, you're out.
and i just can't get my head around games like TN/Bama, TN/UF, TN/UGA, UF/UGA, AUB/LSU, AUB/Bama, GA/AUB being devalued becaue the loser still has a shot at getting in to the playoffs.

the only way i would support a play off is if it only included conference champions, and every conference decided its champion the same way...either have conf. championship game or don't, either way, i don't care, but all of htem should be decided the same way.

And it would included ALL conference champions and the highest ranked independent team. that would give you 12 teams....the 4 highest ranked conf. champions would get a bye week...and the other 8 would play in round 1.

So, for example, conf. champions would be:
round 1:
SEC--bye
Big 10--bye
Big 12--bye
Pac 10--bye

big East vs. ACC

Mac vs. Wac

Sun Belt vs Cusa

MWC vs. Independent

Round 2:
SEC vs ACC
Big 10 vs. MAC
Big 12 vs. CUSA
Pac 10 vs. Indpenent

Rond three:
SEC vs. Big 10
Big 12 vs. Pac 10

Round 4
SEC vs. Big 12

that would be awesome....imo. and it wouldn't devalue the regular season, because if you don't win your conference, you don't get in. and if you lose your conf. championship game, tough, you should have played harder!:)

Think about how much a play-off would have devalued the Texas vs. Ohio St. game.
now that's true...even if we had a play off like the one i described, that would probably eliminate some really good cross sectional games like that...and i doubt you'd see OK/OR, TN/CAL, NEB/USC, WSU/AUB.....etc....good point...

Your all talking about devalued? Thats stupid. Look at the NFL are any of them games devalued? If you go by my formula there are 15 games that mean everything that's 15 game in a row you sit and watch that are OH so valuable.

And to be one of the top 16 have to play some damn football the regular season is still huge.

This "we have a playoff system in effect kina sorta maybe" thats a pile of horse crap man. Come on people decide who's going to the national championship thats not a play off to me in any sence of the word.

I'm one of the 3 people in America that thinks the bowl system is fine the way it is and we don't need a playoff. I could go for a BCS +1 format, but that's about it.

BVN, don't ask for opinions on "your" system, then get all upset when people critique it.

Personally, I think 16 teams is too much. Teams ranked 11th through 16th shouldn't have the opportunity to sniff a title.

I think 8 is questionable because usually there is a large dropoff from the top 4-6 teams. A team ranked #8 and a team ranked #9 are almost identically talented.

I like taking the top 4 BCS rated schools, and rotating the first 2 games between the 4 major bowls.
For instance:

2007: Fiesta and Sugar host the 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 games. Winners face in the BCS championship game that still rotates as well

2008: Rose and Orange host the 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 games

Etc on down the line.

The two bowls without the playoff games can still have their big matchups like LSU v. Virginia Tech.

The bowl system stays alive as well.

That's exactly the sort of "playoff" I'd endorse. It would only add one more game, they could play it during the off week before the Super Bowl and it would be HUGE.

that would make the most sense probably...take the winner of the top 4 in the BCS and play one more game....i'd like that.

I'm with you. The BCS is the best way to maintain the importance of the regular seas, and determine a champion. The plus one would be nice though.
