Playoff System

Florida faced a gassed George Mason who you knew was gonna run out of steam in the Final 4 and a UCLA team that shot themselves in the foot, leg, thigh, ass, stomach and heart for the title game.

Pittsburgh got to face the Bengals sans-Palmer, beat Indy because Mike Vanderjagt sucks in the clutch, and was handed the Lombardi trophy by the refs.

That was also the old system, and I'm still not sure how BYU was crowned the champs that season. I haven't looked into it. But I'm not gonna give anybody crap if they say an undefeated BCS conference team ought to play for the national title when there is no more than one other undefeated BCS team.

I would personally choose to put select one-loss teams in over WVU this year, but we'll see how it goes.
I didn't realize Florida only had to play 2 NCAA tournament games. Also, if you're going to talk about officiating, if the referees don't screw Pittsburgh on Polamalu's interception, the Colts never get close.

I saw this on another website about this big discussion about playoffs.

In a nutshell the argument was about the St. Louis Cards winning the WS. They said if we (College Football) had this system a team compareable to the Cards could win the national championship. Therfore a team "not worthy" in the eyes of the public could win because they played at this right time.

Then someone counter reacted with, well hell, if MLB used what College football uses it would be The Yankees and (Enter NL Team here) every damn year.

I'm a Brave fan and if College Football's system was in during thier run in the 90's and early 2000's they would have represented the NL for like 14 years straight and they proved many years that they were not the best in the NL. I'm not checking the numbers, so that might be a little off. But stick with me here......

I know your saying hell far your comparing College to the Pros, and the pros keep players and baseball has no salery cap so on and such.

Very True, but think about it. What if Tennessee could prove it on the field every year, What if we could go up against these Big 10 teams, Pac10 teams and get a National Championship and not come in 13-0, maybe with a loss or two.

I would much rather get my ass handed to me on the field than let a bunch of guys with biases and egos and computers polls that only the creator knows what the hells going on decide if I'm good enough to go.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Someone from Oregon complaining about officiating. That's rich.
A hollow response based off an entirely false pretense.

If anybody tries to argue that Florida had the best regular season in the country, they are complete idiots. It is simple, a sudden death tournament determines who is the best/luckiest team in the country at that point, not who has been the best all season.

I prefer valuing the season as is, and any sort of playoff beyond a +1 game devalues those regular season games. In CFB, you don't usually get second chances and I like it that way. Your season is on the line in every game you play.

Something worth reading.
Florida coach Billy Donovan says just because his Gators won last season's national title doesn't mean they were the best team.

"I don't think the (NCAA Tournament) crowns the best basketball team," he says. "I think it crowns the team that was able to win six games. And if you look at the field of 65, there's 59 teams we didn't play.

"Who's to say if we weren't in a different bracket against a different team, or played at different sites, that we would have won the national championship? And I'm a firm believer in if you took that tournament after it ended and played it all over again, you'd have a different winner."

Coach speak isn't always wrong or even skewed. I know they often take only the most modest nuggets of truth, but the statement is still correct. Whoever wins a sudden death tournament is the best team at that time, not over the whole year.

A playoff system has been started it started with the teams going to divisons east, west ,north ,south etc. and a championship game. There will be a switch from the bcs to a basketball type format a few years from now we will be talking about football teams on the bubble.

Funny this thread comes up...I put together a website explaining how the BCS poll could be used to determine playoffs, bowl structure/schedule and payout.

I have yet to update it for this season(hence, no UT), I usually update it after the bowl pairings are decided. It's not perfect, just thoughts.

I'll be at the game saturday, driving from the Show-Me state..Leaving Mo @ midnight Friday and driving through....

Boy, if you think there's a lot of complaining now over the BCS, try to imagine what teams #9-16 will be saying if there's an 8-team playoff.

The simple fact is that there's no viable way of putting together a D 1-A playoff. It's nice to say "BCS conference champs get in automatically", but you'd better believe there'd be lawsuit after lawsuit over ALL the conference champions not being included. Since that's 11 conference plus independents, you'd have to have a 16-team playoff.

Forgive me for not thinking that Ohio State against Middle Tennessee State isn't a compelling game that would be a TV ratings bonanza. Don't forget the SEC champion against Central Michigan or Kent State, or East Carolina against the Pac-10 champion.

Let's see here....five at-large spots to fill in. I can think of 6 SEC teams alone that would stomp the crap out of MTSU or North Texas or Troy State. So, where do I sign up for the playoff system again?

Since an NFL style tiebreaker system is unfeasable, the six highest ranked teams not already qualified would get the nod.
... And then the poll problem comes right back into the question, especially if one of those lower-ranked teams is hot at the end of the season. For example, Oklahoma last season. They weren't ranked top 10, but if you watched them you knew they could hang with any team in the country, except Texas or USC.

I think adding the 12 game to the schedule will kill off any chance for a playoff.

Before, we could have had the 12 game be a playoff game before the bowls, then the bowls be the deciding games. You can kiss that goodbye now.

Also dont forget conference championships. Two teams from the big-12, sec and acc would have to play 13 games.
