Noteworthy points from today’s press conference (Jones Week 6 Press Conference - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics):

(1) Accentuating statistical positives: “Rajion Neal had the most yards rushing by a running back at Tennessee since 2009, he had 169 yards. This football team, Team 117 has had three 200-plus yard rushing games. We had three combined from the span 2010-2012. We currently lead the SEC and we are eighth in the country in fewest penalties, a little over three penalties per game. We lead the SEC and we are fourth in the country in fewest penalty yardage. We are tied for number one in the country for interceptions with 11. We lead the SEC and we are third in the country with 15 forced turnovers. We lead the SEC and we are tenth in the country with points off of turnovers

(2) Manifestations of our problems in terms of depth: “A.J. Johnson took 83 snaps at linebacker, Dontavis Sapp took 82 snaps at linebacker plus 12 snaps on special teams. . . . We have too many individuals playing way too many reps. Both our starting corners were in the high 70s in the terms of repetitions on Saturday. And again throughout the course of a long season that can't happen.”

(3) Marlin Lane: "Marlin Lane right now suffered a lower extremity injury. He's day-to-day right now, so we'll know a little bit more probably later today, and into Tuesday and Wednesday. He will not practice today.”

(4) Riley Ferguson and Josh Dobbs: “As much as everyone wants to see them, it's my job and it's my responsibility to them, to their parents, and to our football program to not put them in, if given that luxury, until they're ready. In our professional opinion right now, they haven't been ready. . . . I'm excited about both quarterbacks, both true freshmen quarterbacks. They're great competitors, they're very good football players, and they want to play.”

(5) Jason Croom: "I thought Jason Croom played the best that he's played since we've been here. He made some difficult catches, he played physical, he blocked on the perimeter and we challenged him this week. That's one thing about Coach (Zach) Azzanni, he has the reputation across the country that he's going to get the most out of his players and he challenges them every day.”

(6) Although not directly relevant to Tennessee, he also cited Kenbrell Thompkins, a player from his 2012 Cincinnati team, as an example of their player development process:

"Kenbrell Thompkins last night, greatest story in the National Football League hands down. Undrafted, rookie, free agent, New England Patriots and for him to perform like he performed . . . I'm extremely proud of him. But all the challenges and everything we pushed him through and now he's making the most of his opportunity and that's the way we're going to develop players. We're going to push them everyday, we're going to love them and we're going to make sure when they leave the University of Tennessee they're developed to meet their fullest potential."

It's nice to see the ground game is a point of emphasis. I have a feeling we'll have a couple more 200 yard rushing games before the season ends. And imagine what Hurd and Paulk will do when they arrive next year.

Always great to see positives and areas that our team is progressing and making strides towards getting back to the top...

I am interested to see how long it will be before the negavols derail this thread though!!!

AJ taking 83 snaps, along with Sapp taking 94? That's brutal. Surely they can't keep that up.

Butch's unspoken message was that the dam will develop cracks if they are forced to play that much week after week, thus underscoring the urgency for developing depth and player development to alleviate such heavy reliance on individual players. He also pointed out that Cameron Sutton, a true freshman, had to play 78 snaps at cornerback last week, something that, again, certainly is not ideal.

Butch telling the truth about this team and this program. It was one of his best press conferences in my opinion.

Good message overall, celebrate the victories however ugly. That said it sounded a lot like moral victory pep speech.

I'm just tired of us not having any depth year after year. I know its expected when you've had the coaching carousel that we have, but still.....

Not ideal at all. I will say that Sutton is handling it well. He made some great plays Saturday.

"Sick and tired of being sick and tired"

Still rather be a vols fan in a down year though than some jackwagon fan that switches teams like t-shirts.

Sutton will be a stud. We do have some very serious young studs who are being masked by other issues.

Well Jones and Williams will both be back to full capacity soon helping to alleviate the cb situation. I don't know if we have much of a fix for the lb depth issue outside of next year's class. Just gotta pray the 2's step their game up.

The easiest way to keep them fresh is to keep the ball for a while by taking your time on offense and not go 3 and out. By playing fast you are making players have to play in the high 70s snaps. The good thing though is it might also help them when they do get rest cause they can go harder for longer.

Our coaching staff must find a way to start possessing the football much, much more. I would love to see our offense posses the football twice as much as the opponent in each game and keep our defense off the field.

Butch - you might want to run a slower tempo on offense until you have a roster of players that can sustain over 80 snaps on defense. You might want to consider adapting to the roster you have instead of the one you want it to be until it happens. You might want to consider doing that before you go against UGA this weekend, to be followed by USCe and Bama. Sometimes you need to add in some baby steps to help a roster grow into the final product you want to see. Maybe you did not realize that most of the players on this roster are responsible for 3 losing seasons in a row. Perhaps you observed what happened to your D against Oregon, UF and USA.

Since Butch "gets it" I know this will fall on deaf ears. Just a thought from a lowly fan.

This ............. but he is showing signs of "it's my way or the highway" attitude and as vols fans we r going to pay for it..

Coach cut was one of the best at build plays around your players vs. Square peg round hole coaching..

And on the running game check back with me after the next 3 games
