Poll about Nico Iamaleava with one caveat

If Nico was just an old school scholarship redshirt fresman, no NIL, how would he rate?

Nico has not been able to keep up with the hype. Frankly, outside of the NIL deal I don't know where the hype came from. His last 2 years in high school his team did not finish in the top 10 of California. He passed for 1700 yards his senior year, not an eye opening number. The hype came strictly from his potential not his current ability. Based on that he is coming along nicely for his freshman year. To bad they won't let him run the football.

I think Nico is a little behind where I thought a player who has been on campus for almost 2 years should be but that doesn’t mean I think he is bust. He is obviously super talented and has all the tools and I think he will be a very good QB next season if one of these talented freshman we have coming in don’t scare him off.

All recruiting star ratings are based on potential as there are very few players that can join a team and immediately contribute.

This is why we may want to get MM on the field catching more passes.

Same thing for Seldon and running but I have given up seeing him play. Seems like the rumor is he will redshirt and transfer.

Nico flashes what he could be but this is all a product of Volquest and GV247 along with national media hyping the kid up to astronomical levels when he played in one real game before the season. Granted, everyone paying for those sites wanted to know how Nico looked and helped drive it. Kid will be really good, just frustrating because this is the first year we've had a defense and we have to deal with growing pains at the QB position

I think he's behind schedule for having 7 starts and a year and a half in the program. Also if you take away 5* expectations, he won his first start in a bowl game against a depleted but still solid defense. In some ways, as of the UF game, he has regressed. I think he shows that he has all the skills/potential to be a top 5 QB in the country. I hope he can get there, but I'm concerned that next year's team won't have nearly as much talent.

College football has changed immensely in the last 25 years, but I ran across the following statistical comparison in a Facebook post:

"Nico Iamaleava (freshman) after the Florida game has completed 94 of 143 attempts for 1219 yards 7 touchdowns and 3 ints. 44 carries 135 yards and 1 touchdown

Peyton Manning (freshman) completed 89 of 144 attempts for 1141 yards 11 touchdowns and 6 ints. 21 carries for -26 yards and 1 touchdown." One might call that uncannily similar. Vols Dawg
I won’t rehash my entire diatribe on this comparison (post #23 of this thread).

The “Reader’s Digest” version:

Nico: REDSHIRT Freshman. Early enrollee. Been on campus since Dec of 2022. Participated in 2 Spring Practices, 2 Fall Camps (last SP and FC taking QB1 reps) a full season of practice and games (played in 5 total games starting 1) plus extra bowl practice. A full year + of strength and conditioning & nutrition program. He is 20 years old.

Peyton in ‘94: TRUE Freshman. Went through 1 Fall Camp getting 3rd string reps. Had been on campus since August. Played in 2 of 1st 3 games (3 snaps in 1, 15 in another) before relieving Todd Helton after an injury in game 4. Became the starter in game 5 (Team record 1-3 at that point) Shared reps through the entire season with Branndon Stewart. Played in a run heavy offense (2 or 3/1 run/pass ratio). He was 18 years old.

I think it’s non productive to compare the two but in my opinion (if you must), compare them as second year players in their first full year starting. I “get” PM’s 8 starts “matter” but so does Nico’s time in the program and natural growth and maturity being a full year plus older.

PM’s stats through the first 6 games of 1995:

Completed 139 of 209 passes for 1671 yards, 11 TDS and 3 INTs. 19 Carries for 9 yards (sacks subtracted) for 2 TDs. Record 5-1.

Who did he play? East Carolina, Georgia, Florida (23-36 326 yds 2 TDs 0 INT & 37 points in a loss), Miss St, Oklahoma St & Arkansas.

There are 10 high school players who have over 3,000 yards passing thru 8 games this season. These might be guys who a coach would think could step in right away. I don't know why he is so highly rated with a much lower yardage numbers in high school.

I tried the same comparison in another thread and was told it was essentially comparing apples to bowling balls. I however 100% agree with you on this one.

I am pleasantly surprised that at least one of the more virulent posters that vilify Nico on a regular basis didn't vote the "complete bust" category. There is hope.

I didn’t expect Nico to be great in his first year, however am shocked the offense has regressed vs. the Joe Milton offense from last year. Milton couldn’t complete a touch pass however had a lot more poise, confidence, leadership etc..

And Joe Milton was a fifth year QB vs a redshirt freshman with 7 starts in his career.
