Pool Owners Thread

I have an 8 yr old DE filter. Previous owners left it in crap shape when I bought the house 2 yrs ago. I pay someone to clean it once a year and periodically back flush. So far, it has been fine.

I wonder if I could find a used one on Craigslist.

Time for a pool thread scavenger hunt:

Who can find the cheapest filter large enough for a 16x32 pool?

And who can find the cheapest salt water system.

Brand new pool owner we went with the ozonator/chlorinator combination. Had some friends with salt systems and they had some rusting issues.

My question is we are not getting any chlorine readings, pool guy said we should see low chlorine levels but I'm not getting anything on the test strips. Anyone have any experience with these systems?

Yes, I had a pool for many years.

Have you shocked the pool?

In order to shock it, you sneak out there real quietly at 3 in the morning. And once you get to the edge, scream out 'BOO'!

Remember you get what you pay for.

I used to clean and maintain pools, sand filters suck.
If it were me I would go with paper filters a simple hose works and they last. The worst thing that can happen is a leaf will get through.

I've seen everything from auto covers to solar covers and cages. Big fan of cages. Auto covers, to me, just seem like throwing money around.

I'll rationalize anything but I pay @$400 at the beginning of the year for the pool company to come out here, open it, clean it and put the opening chemicals in. Then they add a ton of salt and it goes from green to blue in just a few days of backwashing and I rarely have to do anything the rest of the year, chemical or servicewise. I may add some salt here and there or one cube of chlorine in the return basket just to make sure it helps the salt keep the chlorine level up.
Imo, it's money well spent. And I think I paid $1500 for the salt system @ 5 years ago and haven't seen rusting. Maybe down the road it will but I don't even know how far my road goes anyway.

Salt generator shouldn't rust, but the blades/fins will accumulate white crusty crap (salt?) and you have to immerse the fins in 50% muratic acid for a few minutes then rinse.

Other than that and some stabilizer once a year, I love the salt system.

Thanks for the link.

Plug that thing into your skimmer or a suction outlet in the pool and let er' rip, theres an attachment that grabs the bigger stuff, like leaves.

The best way to keep your pool clean is to throw 6 kids into it and let them splash around. Stirs up the sediment and gets filtered out quickly.

I grew up with a chlorinated, sand filtered pool in my backyard. I didn't know a thing about salt water pools until my sister recently had one installed. Whenever I heard the term "salt water pool" I always thought it was like swimming in the ocean. Little did I know it couldn't be further from the truth. Salt water pools are nothing like the ocean. They're nowhere near as salty and the water doesn't even taste salty. Also learned that they actually still use chlorine in salt water pools along with muriatic acid. Having a heater on your pool is also a plus, not speaking for the extra energy cost to run the heater especially on a large pool, but it sure is nice getting into the pool both earlier and later in the year.

What size paper filter would you need for a 16x32 pool?

This is what I'm thinking about for my salt system.

Taking bids on building a pool and trying to compare apples to apples. It's a 15 x 21 gunite pool (9500 gal) with spa. Planning on saltwater purification system, DE filter system, 350,000 btu gas heater, variable speed pump, wifi remote control. One builder is pushing ozone chlorinator another is pushing sand filter system. Been doing deligent research but looking for advice from current owners or from anybody that has stayed at a Holiday Inn Express sometime this year. Oh yeah...my LED pool lights will be orange.

Where do you all buy filters? I use the paper tube kind. Have used filtersfast the past 2 times.

Great thread and this is my first year with a pool.

I finally got my chemicals in the ball park of where they need to be. How many chlorine tabs does an average sized pool use each week?

How can I tell when I need to replace the sand in my filter? I've had to backwash quite a bit.

The little glass thimble which shows the clarity of the water has some sand in it. I understand that's not good?

One of my skimmers seems much more powerful than the other. Is that normal?

Nashville

Couldn't say much for Nashville but Triad Pools in Knoxville has built pools in Nashville before and they're good and were definitely competitive here. You'd have to call and ask them.

Got a quote on a 20x40 gunnite pool last year, twice as much as a liner. Didn't look at a fiberglass since the neighbor had so much trouble with his.

Where from?

Has anyone recently put in a pool in the Nashville area? We are getting ready to put one in and the quotes seem ridiculously high for a liner saltwater pool.

Where from?

I want to say it was Bluewater Pools. It shocked me so much I threw it away.
