Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

I don’t think he will go to LSU because if what many on here say and he said in the dugout that he was going to LSU Jay will be afraid of tampering.
Off topic subject, Your son Should give Professional Baseball a shot a great situational pitcher in Major Leagues these days are needed. There are numerous guys that pitch 1/3 or 2/3 of an inning these days a make a good living. I watched this year alone a reliever pitch numerous day in a row by being that matchup guy. This is needed as badly as great starting pitching in MLB right now.. Can't wait to see his contributions next season.. for the Vols...

His football breaking point was when he said he would never post again if we beat Florida last year, and then we did, and he got super pissed and said he would not stop posting because he liked to piss people off.

As far as what college sports is becoming, I think it is great for us. The old way that checkers wants to resurrect amounted to the NCAA setting aside a few programs as free and clear to cheat with impunity, and to attack their rivals. LSU didn't start buying baseball players when the High Court backed NIL! And everybody knows Kirby imported Saban's bag game to GA. With impunity because he knows where the bodies are buried in Tuscaloosa. Kansas recently won the basketball tournament when everyone knew they did so in the middle of an unenforced cheating scandal, and everyone knows UNC staged fake classes for athletes and walked.

Now everyone can pay players and that is the reason Saban and others similarly situated decided to conduct their big campaign to regulate NIL. They want it regulated so they, GA, and OSU, and LSU in baseball, KY UNC Kansas in basketball, etc., can go back to cheating with impunity. The new system or lack of system yields a more level playing field for the majors.

The real issue is who would enforce the regulation. People tend to imagine perfect and just application of rules when they ponder rules. How many blatant targeting cases have their been with the portal? And who seems like the only team penalized for it? That really got this baseball year off on the wrong foot. We know the NCAA can't be trusted. The SuperConferences will do it, people say. Well that is the Birmingham Office and the SEC and they are a by-word for bias and favortism. The bribe-eaters in Congress can't be trusted. Without fair and consistent application across the board, new rules are just weapons in the hands of the same teams that always get a pass imo.

Then you have these other types -- I think checkers sides with them too (but who cares) -- who love to hand wring if and only if Tennessee portals-over someone. I coin "portals over" on the analogy of recruiting over. But these people never go off on any other team for it. I think it's dishonest. That's just how iron sharpens iron and winners win.

I love what Tony Vitello is doing.

The "old way" allowed private schools with sizable endowments to blast past the 11.7 rule with de facto full scholarships. They can still do that, but at least the mainstream school to compete in a different way and not force every kid to pay out-of-pocket to play college baseball.

There's negatives to every system.

The old system of limited transfers with forced 1 year waiting periods was the collegiate equivalent to the old major league reserve clause.

Just because they're college kids does not mean they should be locked into a decision they made when they're 17 years old and forced to stay at a college whose coaching staff could leave literally any second.

The transfer and NIL revolution is bringing capitalism to college athletics. It is the epitome of fair for the student athlete and does make it tough to be a fan. But remember, we too have the right to switch schools to.

One has to assume that TV knew these defections were coming or at least possible if not encouraged. We might as well get used to this. Kinda fun having some anticipation this time of year. Fills the void between baseball and fall practice. It's certainly not how I want things to be, but I'm adjusting quickly.

I’ll be rooting for a 1-0 BaseVols victory. I still want Burns to be successful wherever he ends up.
I'll be rooting for us to run rule them. Same as I do against any team we face. It's nothing against Burns, but I'm a Vol fan through and through and I want to dominate everyone.

Bingo.

The rumors about LSU were out there well before he ever entered the portal. I have no idea if he said anything in the dugout or not, but I do know those rumors about LSU in general were out there for a long time.

I'm not quite as magnanimous. If Burns moves within the conference....especially LSU, I won't wish him success, but I'm a cranky OG so....

Yes. I think if you are Ryan and have been here for 3 years, didn't play his senior year of HS and came in early, then you and Ebbing have to see that you are not the future by who they brought in. I don't know anything about Zellem other than he has to see he will not beat out Blake and third will be crowded. They all three have burnt redshirt year so now is a good time to try the portal. It is sadly a part of baseball and softball especially at all levels. You have to bring in the best each year and some times that means someone you had a plan for is no longer in your plans. But when you go to an SEC school you have to know, as I told Kirby, how many do I have to beat out that wear the same jersey to get a chance to play against the other jerseys.

I only care how they fare against us. Otherwise, I'm apathetic towards anyone that's not a Vol.

It's a bitter truth to be sure. One of life's lessons I guess.

Since the portal really took off I’m pretty sure the vols have only lost 1 guy they actually desperately wanted to keep. And the burns thing is complicated. What you said is simply wrong

What did I say that was "simply wrong"?

1. Tony is great at recruiting....it's true.
2. A couple more Vols will hit the portal....it happened (ie: Ryan Miller, Hollis Fanning)
3. Burns thing isn't complicated, it's normal and I don't think he'll return. But it's...TBD. At least I'm not wrong since it hasn't been brought to conclusion.

By the way, more Vol's will hit the portal prior to 7/13.

Duh…

No way I would switch schools. I'm already excited about next baseball season and getting ready to roll into Omaha with our Vols on the regular.

I don't think I like you.

And I generally try to like everyone.

It just feels like you want bad things to happen.

More will hit the portal by default. We don’t have room for everyone. But the people hitting the portal so far, sans burns, haven’t been big contributors

If he said that, and I don't know that he did, why can't the NCAA go ahead and pop Jay for tampering anyway now? Make an example of him. He would be a spectacular example. Assuming that the NCAA cares about rules and equal enforcement.

I think they would have a hard time proving it is tampering if he doesn't go there. Plus you would have to get the Vols players to say he said it and I don't know that there are enough that would, IF, he said it and I've not found anyone who actually says he said it. Again, the sources have not been verifiable in most of this. I heard it from a player's girlfriend's roommate that I dated once things. No one has actually said a particular player heard him say it In my church world, if you can't tell me who said it then it wasn't said. I got tired early on in ministry of they, they don't say anything. Suzie or Joe or Bill does but they don't have a voice. And the NCAA is definitely going after Jay over what they said.
