'25 Portal Thread

I just remembered all the talk last year from all the talking heads saying OSU was spending money like crazy trying to buy a championship. I assumed it was more players from the portal but didn’t really look close. They did get some studs though. Thanks for the clarification.
It was also with regard to coaches (i.e., landing Chip Kelly as OC).

That turned out to be one helluva hire. He ran circles around Banks. Know Heupel considers it his obligation to guard his offenses secret sauce, but from where I sit, the defensive coordinators have pretty well figured it out. Even if he's determined to keep the ranks closed, are there no Briles or Leach disciples that he could bring in? I do recognize the benefits of promoting from within, but if Heupel has to hold Halzle's hand, it's going to make him a less effective head coach IMO. Know a lot of the issues with the offense are due to a lack of talent, but I don't see a lot from Halzle as a coordinator. Yeah, I know the coach needs the talent to work with, but that also falls on the coaching. They're the ones who evaluated and brought these players in. And on the subject of evals, I'll let that one simmer for another day, but suffice it to say, it's not been proven to be one of this staffs strengths at more than a few positions.

It's the coaches fault that we don't have more talent than UGA and OSU right now? We made the playoffs. We have three 10 win seasons in 4 years for the first time in 20-25 years, and we've been figured out by the DCs out there?

Maybe by "coaches' fault", you're talking about the conveyor belt of staffs that made us an industry laughing stock for the past 25 years. The ones that this staff have saved us from? SURELY, that's who you're talking about.

Are you referring to the same staff that 60% of VolNation complains about in the game threads every week? Just wondering the narrative gets switched so often it's hard to keep up.

I just disagree with it taking time. 4 years ago with where UT was everyone just had such higher expectations with the sanctions of the program, the mass exodus, the stacked roster and the in high demand CJH coming in. Everyone rightly expected a championship right away. All we have been left with is a 11 win, 9 win, 10 win seasons and a trip to CFP.

IT IS JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH and does not live up to what any reasonable fan expected when Cornbread was fired.

Serious question everyone, with 'patience' as a subject this morning:

When we fired the Pruit Gang, under investigation for paying players, with the mass exodus of players, leaving almost no talent...

If someone had told you we'd get three 10 win seasons in the next four years, barely missing the playoffs in one of those years and making the playoffs in another...

Would you have:

(1) Run the messenger out of the forum as a crazy person?
(2) Taken it with overflowing gratitude?
(3) Blamed the incoming staff for not giving us more?

I don't know you, but obviously you are an incredibly great mind to have agreed with me with such clarity and specificity. lol

Our staff must really be putting all their eggs in the post playoff, portal entries as those teams drop out and those kids can still enter...

But even so the add/drop or classes cut off will come up later this month. So will be interesting to see who they add
I believe Eric mentioned that UT can be patient because of the semester calendar and has one of the latest add/drop dates of all schools. Now that UT has a winter mini-term, the spring semester doesn’t even start until late January. UT students now get about 6 weeks off for the holiday break.

Unlike @TrippieRedd, my momma raised me right so I know to say thank you for what you receive before expecting more…

So thank you @KingVFL, @dascoop, @Stoerner Fumbles, @matts42012, @MetalVolunteer @Garren04 @LWSVOL @99vawl for the information you all share.

As well as @jvols1999 and @allvolrecruiting for the info you share on recruits.

You make this forum the best site for information and discourse.

And allow me to apologize for @TrippieRedd behavior. He was raised by wolves.

Don't expect us to ever recruit at the level of a UGA, Bama or OSU, but for us to be so lacking at some positions in year 4 is a problem. Sanctions or not, how do we have no one on the OL that Heupel's crew has brought in in our starting lineup? Not a single one. Know it's been beaten to death, but how is that possible? Again, JUST ONE! Same for WR. Who has Heupel's staff brought in at that position that has been a real playmaker? Since Tillman and Hyatt left, I can't think of a single guy that a defense would consider a guy they needed to really focus on.

As for the record, Heupel inherited some serious talent from Pruitt at key positions and had one of those "perfect players for the system" in Hooker right under his nose. Even so he chose to bring in Milton instead. Still scratching my head on that one. As for the schedule, I'm confused. I see 7, 11, 9 and 10 wins for Heupel in his UT career. In '22, those 11 wins were, in no small part, due to Pruitt recruits. Still, he put the pieces together and gave us a dream year. No complaints there. As for this year, I give him all the credit in the world in getting 10 wins with this roster, but let's be honest about the schedule. We were given a very manageable path and we took full advantage of it save the Arky stinker. In summary, I agree that we are way ahead of schedule. For this program, the average of 8-9 wins is the norm historically. He's done well. Can't ask for more. Just saying that their recruiting and development is a real concern going forward...at least for me and a good bit of that goes directly to the coaching staff.

Per the OL. They have been here 4 years. OL take time to develop, especially considering the "sanctions" part of my response. They admitted last year that they were dealing with terrible negative recruiting until the NCAA ordeal was put to bed.

And that's really the root of my biggest issue with posts like yours. "Poor recruiting/evaluation is their fault."

Well, I'd say they worked their ***es off to find the best players for their system that were willing to take a chance on them at the time, and developed them enough to win more than we'd have likely dared to dream.

They've probably done a great job, all things considered, and with what they were dealing with. And that would include every position, not just OL or WR.

Each of us has a choice about what perspective we'll bring to these issues.
