'25 Portal Thread

He’s got a kid @ home. Prob took the most money he could get. Hard to blame him.

Exactly. We shouldn’t blame guys in his position. If you’re not going to play in the NFL you have to wring as much as you can out of college football to setup your future.

AP's job requires him to have some tact and to be discreet, or else he will lose the connections he has made. If he learns a kid is going to commit, it's very distasteful to ruin that kids moment by openly telling everyone. Which is why he uses subtle clues to release info at times. It's a way to share insider info without stepping on anyone's toes.

And obviously, he isn't gonna comment about players not currently in the portal, because that would open TN up to potential tampering issues. And TN and it's sports reporters aren't alone in that endeavor. No writers/reporters from other schools are doing it either. That would be career suicide.

I don’t disagree at all. I just think if you know you must be subtle / vague, then you should expect questions from fanatics. Handling said questions with grace / decency would go a lot further with paying members.

It’s clear to me that the staff decided to take December off and let too many prized targets slip to reprehensible teams.

I think it’s time for a coaches and VolNation meeting to ease the concerns. Otherwise, we enter the transfer portal and take our NIL money with us. If Nico’s dad can do it, why can’t we?

Seeing where our transfer WRs have ended up tells you all you need to know about the talent problem we had…..

Addition by subtraction……

Just like last years DB room…..
And who recruited the WRs talent problem the last 4 years that transferred??
Squirrel White is the ONLY high school recruit to start in the last 4 years that this staff brought in from high school. Same goes for the offense line not a single recruit from high school has started a single game.

Inquiring minds want to know. We certainly have a recruiting/development issue at two key position groups.

Have the current available scholarship numbers been posted? Lot of folks wanting a big transfer class but some more would have to leave to keep us under 83 it seems?
We are at 81 now.
This is assuming:
Pearce goes Pro
Karic can return
Bishop is placed on scholarship

The entitlement of people to demand that AP tell them information that he is not authorized to spill is really weird. I understand why he gets snarky when he gets the same questions asked repeatedly. Any normal person would get agitated.

Entitlement? They pay the man! He’s not doing them a favor.

Others have mentioned it too but he has to walk a fine line. Reveal too much and compromise the program, but reveal too little and it doesn’t appear worth the monthly cost.

I mean, if that's my job, that people are paying me for, then I keep my agitation to myself. AP isn't doing it for free. Like I said, I understand he has info he just can't share, but you also don't piss on your customers.

It’s weird to me many want us to work the portal but then hold it against the staff when we work the portal

The answer to this would be no. The stuff he does put out is, "TN is in on this kid, TN is in a good spot" Very vague on alot of his answers to save face incase he is wrong. I dont follow recruiting info from him. Its as bad as coach speak many of times.
OK,

Austin is a relationship guy. Since we are at the time of year where we are criticizing AP again. Let's remind ourselves.

Austin,

1. Sits down to lunch with Huepel
2. Is close friends with coaches (current and former).
3. Has a boss who works for VRN, and is very conservative himself
4. Trust is essential to these kid's families
5. Has said he will not take away from anyone's thunder

Knowing those facts. What do you want him to do? People talk.

It's weird to me that we keep having to work the portal for WR and OL every year. It's almost like the people who coach those positions aren't developing the kids they recruit from HS. 🤔

This right here! Idk why people don’t understand this. Read between the lines, listen to what’s not being said, and recruiting is fluid. Most importantly, don’t get bent outta shape. You’re grown (probably) act like it.

How many of those spots have we had open? Squirrel, Bru, and 3/5 of the OL had been here for forever until this year when Squirrel and Bru were still here and 2/5 of the OL had been here forever.

As of right now next year we will be playing a lot of HS guys that the staff recruited. Yet many here are wanting portal guys at those very positions - WR and OL.

Bru came from the portal. Brazzell came from the portal. Now we're looking for another WR to start from the portal. We can go back further to Velus and JP also coming from the portal. As for OL, we keep going to the portal for starters there as well. The other positions seem to have stabilized, but WR and OL, not so much.
