Reading the tea leaves:

It's got to be Carnell Tate or Brandon Inniss at WR, especially considering EricVol's "next week" message. We have the history and relationship with Tate. He's not flourished in Columbus and largely stuck behind insane talent there. We also recruited Inniss pretty hard IIRC. OSU also just sigbed FOUR 4-star receivers. 2 of them having the same measurables as Tate.

The OL and RB is coach-dependent. The OL is likely also a ND or OSU player based on "next week". Don't see anyone obvious we'd have relationships with at OSU.

Of course, some NFL coaching moves may happen next week too, like Deion. But Seaton is not a C/G.

If we add guys after Spring, are any of the caliber that we expect to be starters by Fall? For many players it’s asking a lot to show up in the summer and be a starter by September unless they’re supremely talented.
If it's true that the staff like where we are with the roster, they may not have to be starters. From what I heard from our insiders, the staff likes the roster, will try for elite talent if it becomes available, but again... they like our roster. Sounds like portal-gets may not need to be starter quality; they'll go for elite of it makes sense, but no need to panic if they try for the odd elite player and miss out.

TIFWIW...

Is there any particular reason he was the top pass rusher in the portal? Is it just because he was a former 5 star? Because there are several more productive pass rushers in the portal than this kid. That Nebraska pass rusher was pretty dominant in only like 7 games.

So much for the pages of Ewers to Miami. Ewers to Georgia. Ewers back to Ohio State.

Ewers declared for NFL draft,....
Tbf, Beck did the same thing then backed out and transferred.

But their situations aren't similar (Beck being hurt and not being able to really throw till late spring or early summer), so i do expect Ewers actually will go to the NFL.

Tate's had 962 yds and 5 TDs on 68 catches in two years. His production tripled from his freshman year to his sophomore year. He's set to bump up to the #2 role behind Smith, next year, when Egbuka leaves for the 2025 draft. Not sure I'd call that not flourishing.

Now, if he doesn't want to live in the shadow of Jeremiah Smith, then transferring makes sense, but I'd think that playing next to JS has some serious advantages, as well. My guess is that if he's indeed transferring, it is for a significant NIL deal at, or north of a million bucks. Are we willing to go there for a WR with his potential?

That’s my biggest question at this point. Does the staff think we need starters or just add depth? It’s encouraging to see that they like the current roster.

If it's a productive WR, as been reported, than the only logical conclusion is Tate. ND has some guys, but no one we've ever been connected to I don't think. OSU only productive WRs on the roster are Smith (not happening), Egbuka (NFL bound), and Tate

If one is to believe the reports... shrug. We'll see. All I know is, that which I don't know about this staff is informed by that which I do know. I won't worry for a while. It's their job to work through these things, and at this time I trust them.

If it's Tate or Inniss, does that push one of our outside guys in the portal? Unless we are cool with running MM or either in the slot. Otherwise I guess we don't mind rotating guys on the outside these days.
I’ve always wondered if they let MM in on who we wanted from the portal and that was his first push to testing the waters on leaving in the first place. Maybe he’s at peace with it.

Heupel likes the roster AND we will probably sign three more portal players. As for the numbers, there are some current players that know they will move up at their position or leave after Spring. This particular thread is too exhausting to service regularly, or engage in Q&A, but we are down the road with a difference-maker at WR, a guard/center, and a safety. With the WR, I know everyone is very tight-lipped for some reasons that will make sense after the fact. I’m not trying to be cryptic, but I can’t (and I assume others can’t) share anything until that one is on the dotted line. Additionally there are a couple of other players that are connected to possible departures by two high profile coaches. There are players we’d make room for, and specifically a very good RB has reached out. If a coaching move happens, he’ll come. There is a lot to shake out, but the signs seem to point to three additional signings between now and Summer, and possibly more. As for how I feel about the current state of things— keeping Boo and Matthews, and others who entertained leaving, is huge. I think our WR room has more promise than we are acknowledging. I’m a bigger fan of Jefferson than many, and I continue to think he, Matthews and Staley are very underrated. My only concern is that the three guys were heavily pursuing are all in bets with no backup plan. In fairness, this staff has done very well delivering on a focused portal plan to date. I think they will again this year.

If your targeting methodology is correct, it would make sense, hard to sell YOU ARE THE MAN, if you are fishing in other waters, and that info does get out.

Hard to instill confidence in INEXPERIENCED rooms if you are casting wider nets. A new dimension added this year with Morris.

In WR room, with Kits coming back in the TE room, and adding those two young studs, could next years schemes include flexing out some TE’s for matchup wins while still stretching the field. L
Game changer or hold makes some sense.

With no basis, my gut says we will move back to a more 22’ like tempo game plan, giving 2nd year Nico less restricted windows, better utilization of his instinctual running, in anticipation we will need more Outscore them, than don’t put our defense in short fields schemes. Back shoulder passes come back for instance. Use the skill set that made him a 5 star. Think that would work better with two other young rooms, OL and RB. He is not a freshman anymore and can use his instincts instead of pocket discipline. Lots of star guys as backups this year as well, not just a game manager and no ALL SEC RB to hand it to.

That is my story and I am sticking to it.

If we add either, I hope we do put MM in the slot. Feel like Heup may be too fixated on smaller speed guys. Felt like Bru should have been in the slot more. We see Jauan Jennings kill it in the NFL as a bigger guy, why not put someone like MM in there? As opposed to hoping one of the younger guys figures it out.

People keep pointing to Tate or innis because we have connections to them previously.

Complete disregard for the fact that virtually everyone we’ve signed from the portal - we had no noteworthy connections to them previously.

It could be Tate…. But why would a kid slotted to be the #2 receiver at his dream school and about to win a national championship leave?

tbf he played Donte in the slot last year until the UK game, then he was actually an influence, however brief it may have been
