'25 Portal Thread

Is there any particular reason he was the top pass rusher in the portal? Is it just because he was a former 5 star? Because there are several more productive pass rushers in the portal than this kid. That Nebraska pass rusher was pretty dominant in only like 7 games.
I’ll take a stab. He played very well behind Mykell Williams and was going to be a starter in 2025. UGA’s scheme asks DEs to do a lot of stunting and general block absorption to open rush lanes for others, and they almost always have rush lane responsibilities. He collected a fair number of TFLs and sacks by being the second guy: hitting the QB as he stepped up or after avoiding a LB. If he’s getting stats, it’s because he beat at least one and often two blocks inside.

UGA doesn’t produce a ton of sacks by the nature of its scheme. Missouri plays something more akin to Tennessee’s 4/3: ends have more freedom to attack the OT. Wilson has elite athleticism and good moves. He’s not a Pearce style explosive athlete with insane bend around the edge, but Wilson can win with speed, with power, with moves, or with tenacity. I think he wanted a chance to highlight his skills in a freer system.

Obviously, I wish he had stayed. He’s in the mold of Travon Walker—a DE who can play inside and who never put up crazy numbers but who consistently won his reps within a system. Walker translated that film into a #1 overall pick and 10+ sacks a year in the NFL, but I can’t fault Wilson for looking elsewhere.

I’m worried that Missouri got him because of money, but it’s not a terrible scheme fit. I would have thought Ohio State would be a bigger player in his recruitment, as it plays a 4/3 and is losing a lot. It’s a minor red flag that the Buckeyes didn’t bite.

Ohio State's NIL must not have the $$$ to compete with the big programs like Missouri. This is a fail on the part of their staff. They aren't serious about winning IMO.
*Edit* They just got stuffed in a locker by Drinkwitz.
Yeah clearly that’s the case. I mean OSU loses so many recruiting battles don’t they? I mean their staff and NIL are trash. I mean just look at how bad they are doing ya know? 🙄🙄🙄

More news (not good) Jermod McCoy tore his ACL in offseason training. Has already had surgery. Projected back at the start of 2025 season. Per AP.

Guess we know why we are bringing in a corner to visit now.
Best it happen now but if he is back next year he’ll be nowhere near 100%

Interesting. We're pretty set at corner with McCoy / Gibson / McMurray, but I guess we don't have anything proven beyond those three so some insurance doesn't hurt.

FYI: My grades have him below the three already on the roster, right next to McMurray.
Our need for a corner just went up drastically with McCoy out
