What did AP say that was hinting at a bigger transfer away from UT?

He alluded to all the current players wanting more money.

Know some think he was prepping folks for a big time player(s) leaving, and in a way he probably was, but just think it’s the reality of things that a lot of schools will lose one of its better players to the portal nowadays because of how much money is involved. So nothing he said was particularly groundbreaking.

Good portal tackles that can come right in and play are far a few between. Probably the toughest position to recruit or find in the portal. It takes more time to develop quality OL than anything, especially tackles. GBO
Yep. Agree.

But the fact is……if someone is better and will help me win…..I want that player

He has been far from consistent. He has 647 yds and 6 TDs. Almost half of those yards and 5 TDs came in 3 games against UTC, Ms St and Vandy. He has required a lot of work to become a one trick pony.

Overall he has had around 900 yds and 8 TDs in 2 seasons. Is that type of production worth hindering the development of your HS guys and eventually losing 2 of them? I would say no and that is a bad portal pick up.

Who on the team has been a more consistent big play threat than him this season?

No idea who Sparks is, but unless Elarbee has completely failed at his job, which is a possibility, we don't need OTs. We need Guards.
Yep. Mauigoa can play Guard or RT, but I seriously doubt he’s transferring from a program that has him at RT to go play Guard.

Rumors on VQ that A Carter about to enter. That would be…weird.
I wonder if they have internal communication about what they are going to offer in NIL before a player decides to enter the portal. Hopefully he is just resting the water and comes back. It doesn't feel like we blew our wad in recruiting and it doesn't sound like we are looking to be big spenders. We should have the funds to retain our talent.

Or it’s just a rumor.

Staff is very methodical in their approach to the transfer portal. They don't want guys chasing money. And that's exactly what a lot of higher end guys are doing. They want guys that will fit with this team.
Obviously their approach works. So, metering the second guessing on this end 🤓.

Until the first sack is given up, then Ellarbee is outta there!

You don’t think we had to pay top dollar for Heard last season? Probably McCoy also?

Heard, yes, because of his position and our need. I think McCoy got fair money, but doubt he broke the bank. I'd guess he's due a raise after this season. It's been said many times, we don't do bidding wars. We offer what we believe is fair and if they want to chase money elsewhere, so be it.

Our portal strategy seems to be we don't chase the superstars. We're looking for a particular kind of player. Fit is more important than anything else, including insane talent. It's how they maintain culture.

That is not an accurate representation. They want players that fit what the team needs on the field and fits the culture. That is completely correct. If that person is a superstar then that is great. That is not a reason they will not go after a player. If that player has a high price tag they will pay it. It is not that they won't spend money or don't want players that are highly coveted superstars. What they won't do it pay more than market value for a player. So did we not want a player because he was a highly coveted superstar? Or did we want the player, who also fits our culture, but were not willing to pay above market value and lost out on the player because another team in desperation mode was willing to pay more than market value?

Having seen how Ole Miss' chasing superstars strategy worked out, I am definitely ok with this.

If last year's portal pick ups are any indication of the talent evaluation and roster strategy by this staff, then I am excited for how we update the roster via the portal this year. Where would we be without McCoy, Kitsleman, and even Heard this year? Among others, our transfers blended really nicely with our HS talent.
