LV softball player Melissa Davin is having shoulder surgery today in Knoxville to repair the torn labrum in her left shoulder. Hoping that Doctors don't find any other issues and that they are able to get her on the road to recovery!

Thank you for your prayers!!

Melissa is home at her apartment... trying to rest. She has had some pain but overall doing well. She has been a little on the cranky side but finally did fall a sleep and got some rest.

The doctor said that she had a large tear which had created a flap which was getting hung up (impingement) and caused her pain. A portion was unable to be repaired and was removed. My wife never asks many questions but did ask for a copy of the Doctor's report. I am looking forward to reading the report.

There were no rotator cuff issues which was good news.

Doctor said about a 6 month rehab but should be OK.

Thanks for your prayers and concern!

Go Vols!

Sounds like the same injury my sister had after her freshman season. Timeframe sounds about right; as long as the rehab goes well, I bet Melissa will be ready to go in time for the start of next season.

Glad there was no rotator cuff injury...that cost my cousin the chance to play major college softball when she tore hers her senior year of HS (she had UT and Bama offers, among several others).

Bates picked Tennessee! Boom! GBO!!

I know that Melissa will work hard in rehab! I have seen her do some amazing things over her softball career.... including coming back from injury.

Thanks again for your prayers and concern for Melissa!

Who does the therapy ? UT trainers or a PT at the hospital ? I am still quite amazed at the season she had despite all this -- wont forget that moonshot HR vs Texas A&M she had - where even the ESPN cameras lost sight of it -- Go Vols !

I don't know the exact details or extent of her injury. I requested a copy of the doctor's report but from what I heard from my wife who spoke to the doctor.... she had a large tear in the labrum but no rotator cuff damage.

The tear created a "flap" in the tissue... which folded over and would get hung up and cause impingement & pain. They repaired most but had to remove some damaged tissue.

The doctor said that it will be a 6 month rehab but should be good to play by season... she is in rehab every day during the week so she is working on both her shoulder and hand. Her hand is doing much better.

Hey I did't realize it was her father but get over yourselves. Labrum surgery is practically out patient surgery. Our society is too sensitive. I need prayers for the hang nail I just got. What a bunch of pansies.

BigBadVol....What an Ahole...Pansies?

She tore her labrum last fall and played with it all fall, reinjured it over January workouts doing the "bootcamp" and played all spring season with it.... if it was outpatient and not a big deal, why were the doctors so concerned about the large tear? why is she in a sling for almost 2 months? She might be able to swing a bat sometime in December..

Same kid that broke her hand in May, had surgery with a plate and 9 screws and returned to play in the WCWS 3 weeks after having hand surgery...

The same kid that played her sophomore season wih a tear in her tendon holding her knee cap in place and a severe bone bruise.

Not trying to be a smart azz but labrum surgery is a fairly common surgery that usually responds very well. I've had this surgery twice. Asking for prayers is a little over the top, don't you think?

Labrum surgery can be a very big deal depending on the amount of damage and the degree of the tear. Full tear recovery can take 12 months. Given it is not her throwing shoulder hopefully the recovery will be quicker and not threaten her ability to play. Hope all goes well for her.

Prayers for Melissa and any other requests or needs spoken or unspoken. Prayer DOES change things and I am now praying for a specific hardened heart.
