Possible B12 Expansion

Lost in this news is Memphis being left out once again. The locals are in meltdown mode. Part of the reasoning is the alumni bases and fanbases of the 4 chosen schools is broader. It also solidifies the grim reality that Memphis will always be a Have Not. The fans are delusional that other conferences see Memphis as a threat and a sleeping giant.

Agreed, and I'm speaking as both a Memphis and Clemson alum.

Cincy and UCF have the two best football programs in the AAC and both would greatly expand the Big 12 footprint. If they get all 4 of the teams they are targeting, it still won't make up for losing Texas and Okie, but it's probably the best they can do. Lots of money in Orlando, Houston, Cincy, and Mormon land, too.

I doubt this happens, but it would would all the sense in the world and have all the remaining G5 conferences and small independents form an alliance. The commissioners could sit down, divide conferences and teams based solely on geography (TV$ difference with biggest G5 brands going to B12 is going to be minimal) to help reduce costs for non football sports. It makes no sense at this point to have CUSA, AAC, and Sunbelt all having teams located right on top of each other while also having Temple vs Tulsa or SMU being in the same conference.

You can also do a scheduling partnership to get "premium" G5 matches like Memphis vs Boise St.

Then you could negotiate TV deals as a bloc. Getting the MAC, Mtn West, Sunbelt, AAC, and CUSA brings A LOT of content.

They're going to have to do something. Just continuing to gobble up smaller conferences a few teams at a time just doesn't make sense at this point.

Nebraska is in a no win situation. Can't compete even in the weaker B1G West and there is NO WAY you can go back to the B12 for a lot of reasons. Huskers have the name brand, a HUGE fan base and now at least B1G tv money. Their style of play is perfect for the B1G but the recruiting has died since the switch.

The key part is the "no win" part.

A name brand and huge fan base are great things.

You don't win jack and that name brand and fan base start deteriorating.

Nebraska is UT at the moment. Historical power unsure of how it's gonna get back to it's traditional spot at the table. Problem being, Tennessee due to demographic changes is seeing more and more home grown talent. What's the last time you saw a big time recruit from Nebraska?

Pity really. I have always enjoyed my time in Nebraska. Good people who love their football.

Can anyone make a remotely decent argument that UCF, Cincy, and Houston would be better off in the neutered Big XII than they would in the AAC?
TV money. Many programs in the BIG XII (not named OU or Texas) would be ranked in the upper half of the PAC 12 in TV ratings over the past 5 seasons with Oklahoma St coming in third behind USC and Oregon. The BIG 12 after OU and Texas leaves will still make more money from the TV partners than the AAC will.

After a few good years in a mediocre conference, they do have delusions of grandeur, that’s for sure. They think everybody should want them and nobody does. Very sad 😢 My heart bleeds for them.

Big12 probably got a “no” from Nebraska. Money talks and Nebraska can’t take a huge $ hit to move down. I’d reach out to Colorado & Utah to get them with BYU. They can’t be happy in PAC 12 & with Tx gone they might consider. Add Houston or Cincy for balance

There is no way that the remaining Big XII will make as much as the Pac 12. Nowhere close.

The remaining B12 is doomed to being the best G5 rather than a legit P5. Oklahoma and Texas were responsible for 50-70 percent of their TV revenue. Their per school payout will drop from 35 million down to 15 or so million. Every school left is second fiddle in their own start at best, most worse than that, except Kansas, which is a small state that brings little attraction for TV or streaming rights.

Maybe we can join the B12 after the SEC kicks us out for not meeting expectations of an SEC member.

Another problem for Memphis in the short term is that the best football coach they ever had (Norvell) is now in his first year at Florida State. With apologies to Timmy West. 😁😁

Feel bad for the also ran from Pac 12. I think they were dumb not to take a team or two from the Big 12.

But I agree, the Big 12 needs a blue blood. And they just dont have one anymore. And I dont see where they get one. Only one slightly available is Notre Dame, and that doesnt make any sense on so many levels.
The PAC could certainly use some TV slots in the CTZ. Nobody in the ETZ is going to stay up and watch a PAC game unless it's USC vs Oregon.

What does FSU to the SEC (which isn't going to happen) have to do with UCF going to the Big XII? How are those two situations even remotely related?

THINK. If the SEC can pull florida state then two of the four florida teams are in the SEC and you just broke up the acc. Did you never play risk?

If I’m the President of UCF, Cinn, or Houston, I try and persuade the other 2 schools to decide to go or not go as a group. Might give all of them more leverage in any negotiations. It’s not clear to me that the B12 can survive even if 1 or 2 of these schools join. Of course, no one wants to stay in the AAC forever.

Seems some people on here think Memphis is a marketable brand...They aren't...They do not own thier own football stadium, they don't own thier own basketball arena...They are a small school that barely draws 15000 a game, now why exactly would ANY bigtime conference want them?...It's hilarious.

Kevin Steele only won 3 games in three years in the worst period in Baylor football and Baylor was still drawing close to 30k per game.

I feel like they should have added Boise State instead of Houston. They already got 3 Texas teams so Houston seems like overkill.

It's probably because of the teams from the old BIG XII North. When A&M left for the SEC the northern schools insisted they be replaced by another team from Texas...thus TCU was added. It insured at least two games in Texas each season for exposure and recruiting purposes.

Plus, The City of Houston is about to surpass Chicago as the third largest city in the country. Add in the surrounding counties and there are a lot of potential eyeballs for the TV partners (and recruits).
