Possible Defense next year

WDE - Vereen
DT - O'Brien
NT - ?
SDE - Jordan Williams

SAM - Curt
MLB - AJ
WILL - Weatherd

C - Coleman?
SS - Randolph
FS - McNeil / TKjr
C - Cam

Look's pretty solid, though I don't know who our NT is going to be.

Hoping Carr takes that role. Mosley won't be ready yet.

Leo: Vereen
DT: Owen Williams
DT: Saulsberry
DE: Jordan Williams

The starting 4 on the DL doesn't mean a whole lot because we'll rotate a lot of guys and many more than 4 will get significant snaps. Carr, O'brien, Lewis, Miller, Mixon, Henderson, Hendrix, and Barnett all have a shot at seeing a lot of snaps. Vickers, Malik Brown, and Mosely are deal horses to crack the rotation.

OLB: Maggit
MLB: AJ
OLB: JRM

I think Weatherd's skillset is similar to Maggit's and he'll back him up for the most part. Both could be used as speed rushers on 3rd down. JRM seems like a pro type WLB who should be athletic enough to play 3 downs. Bates is a dark horse to crack the rotation at that spot because of his athleticism and instincts. Justin King is a wildcard here because we haven't seen him at LB. I have a feeling the coaches redshirted him for a reason and we may see a lot of him this season (especially if Maggit and/or Weatherd end up playing closer to the line of scrimmage as some are speculating could happen).

CB: Coleman
NB: Payne
S: Randolph
S: McNeil
CB: Sutton

IMO this is the hardest position group to project. I put Payne at NB over Gaulden because he'll have spring practice as an advantage. One of Kelly, Gaulden, or McDowell could snag the safety spot from McNeil, but I'm not sure it will happen since none are EEs. I'd consider Riyadh Jones and Malik Foreman dark horses to steal Coleman's spot or the NB spot. Evan Berry is a wildcard and if they stick him on defense he's athletic enough to have a Sutton-like impact.

TL;DR: There are a lot of variables at each position group.

Could Rod wilkes ever die ? You fool !!!

My apologies (forgive me almighty Rod Wilks) I meant to say he has regenerated a la Doctor Who into Jalen Hurd.
That's not death, just recycling to allow the legend to grow even more.

bottomline this defense should be better than this past year's. yes experience will cause some bad plays but they should not have 1 game like the oregon game was this year. if they do it will be coaching to blame no excuses. the talent is there.

Before his injury this past fall, Saulsberry was playing the best of any of UT's DL's. Why people so easily either forget or dismiss him baffles and frustrates me.

Is he healthy at the moment?

Coaching was the largest factor on D last year. Although the results were bad, I could see a "direction" they were trying to take the O. Implementing a system like theirs on O does explain some of the issues.

On D, they returned to the 4-3 after only one year away. Yes, there are some differences in the way one coach deploys the 4-3.... but nowhere near enough to explain why most of the same guys who manned a credible D in '11 were awful this past fall. To say there are questions as to whether Jancek is an SEC level DC is a massive understatement.

Hoping Hendrix is our Carl Lawson this year at DE. Not remotely impressed with Jordan Williams.

To me, Williams is similar to Hood. He reliably plays his assignment but doesn't give you a lot more. Surround him with other good to very good players... you get a solid guy who helps other make plays. But don't expect him to be a huge playmaker himself.

I agree. A defense doesn't have to have playmakers at every position in order to be great; but of the ones who are not playmakers, they must play their assignments. I think Williams can do that, and I think he is strong enouch that teams won't be able to abuse us by running toward his side of the ball.

That being said, a great defense is able to generate a pass rush from it's front 4. Vereen won't be able to get that done by himself. We need someone else to emerge.
