I think it's a done deal at this point. The goal wasn't making Hoover in the first place. The goal was an NCAA regional.

Midmajor coach most deserving a promotion--if we want to pluck another from the Horton coaching tree--is Andrew Checketts.

He turned around a school with no baseball tradition almost overnight, didn't let the facts that UCSB is reasonably selective, more expensive than many in-state competitors, and has below average facilities slow him down.

Any SEC flavor to his resume?

I am out if he doesn't

And after surprising everyone by hosting a regional last year (though not in their own park because it doesn't meet standards) and losing two weekend starters to the draft, he has them back in the hosting conversation again this year.

If a new hire is made, I think you have to go with someone who has had successful coaching and recruiting experience in the SEC or ACC. If they also have successful head coaching experience all the better. Preferably they should also have at least one staff member who has successful experience in either the ACC or SEC.

The four names mentioned in a previous post all fit the criteria. It comes down obviously to the best mix of recruiting and player development. It seems many times in baseball searches the person doing the hiring leans on personal and or past connections. If Hart is responsible for the hiring don't be surprised to hear about Mike Martin Jr being in the mix. Would not be my choice btw.

If he can flame out in Super Regionals like his old man, it would be a coup for this program.

Martin Jr. on paper would be a huge hire IMO. What is your holdup on him?

My holdup with him may be unwarranted but he is so connected to FSU and has never been anywhere else. I suspect he may have a tough time adjusting to a new environment. I could be totally wrong but that's my feel for it. I personally like a guy who has been a few different places and has been successful. More contacts for staff hirings and better ability to handle change.

20 years coach and recruiting coordinator at an ACC power under his hall of fame father. I don't see how it wouldn't be an excellent hire.

Very few success stories out there in the coaching profession where sons learned from their dads as legends.

Pitino, Dooley, knight, summit come to mind

He needs a successful stint as HC away from dad to impress me

Everybody ALWAYS forgets that which we knew before the season even started! In fact, we all knew this back in September 2015 !!! Before Simcox, the previous coach in that position and recruiting, went after high school prospects that were Top Pro Prospects. This is a mistake at the college level nowadays since the signing bonuses have gotten so high. We lost almost an entire recruiting class last year, and most the previous class to this recruiting mistake. We knew back in September that we would have very limited pitching going into this season. Well, here we are and it has proven itself to be correct. Why is everyone surprised? The current coaching staff is excellent. To make a change at the top would be a huge error. Simcox knows how to recruit 3-4 star prospects and coach them up to MLB draft prospects over the next three years. Once in a blue moon, you can get a 5 star prospect to come to college who is simply not mentally ready for pro ball. We have not done this route at UT for over 8 years now! That is why we have 1-2 star recruits starting in our everyday lineup. Hard to compete with FL's, LSU's, SC's etc.. with lesser calibur players. That said, some of these lesser talents have had decent season's, far and above their talent level, in my opinion. I think it relates to the coaching change at the end of last year by adding Simcox. I had no expectations this year. I knew we had no pitching. We don't. We have a few that really compete, but so what. The results are what they are. You ARE you're record. Phil Garner, is NOT coaching again - let alone in college. Helton has zero interest in being a head coach. Stop the silly talk. We have a great coach. It's a non-revenue sport. Give it patience and time and we will have our day again soon. This year is a surprise to NO ONE.

If all his success was under his father, then there's plenty of reasons to think it's not an excellent hire. What has he done on his own?

No one to be taken seriously has dropped Garner or Helton has names, only drive-bys who only could name about 3 people who used to play for Tennessee.

But as far as patience, what is long enough? This is year 5, one more year than we gave Raleigh and we're about to likely miss Hoover, meaning we're taking a step backwards. There's no excuse getting swept by Mizzou and we blew the series at Auburn. If you're showing progress, you win both those series.

And I disagree that this year is a surprise to "no one". If you had said back in February we'd be where we are, many would say that's highly disappointing.

On the Tennessee Baseball Facebook post after Saturday's game, Helton and Burke were the top names (two guys who've never coached before) and then a guy said Holbrook. I couldn't believe that people actually think those 3 would be good hires, or even consider coming here in regards to Holbrook.

Well, it's not a surprise because it looks like the previous 4 years.

2012: 12th of 12 teams.
2013: 13th of 14 teams.
2014: 11th of 14 teams. One and done at SEC
2015: 12th of 14 teams. One and done at SEC
2016: 14th of 14 teams.

Whether Serrano is a great coach is both subjective and irrelevant.

What is relevant is that new coaches have a brief honeymoon period during which they can credibly tell recruits about the successful program they're building. After five years of no progress, it becomes a lot harder to sell the experience of competing for a college championship.

The players he wants recruit this summer have seen UT in the basement under Serrano's leadership since they were in elementary school. The only ones he'll land are the ones a) who have pre-existing UT loyalties, b) to whom he is willing to overpay market price, c) whom the top SEC teams don't want, or d) who want to go pro and need a plan b or a bargaining chip, and are willing to overlook the fact that he may not be there when they arrive on campus.

And it's not going to get better. Look at the 2017 commitments.
We have 5 commitments. Vandy has 17, and ten of them are ranked higher than our highest ranked recruit.

The teams we're contending with for the last spots at Hoover all have more commitments. We have two ranked above 500. Everyone else has at least four.
