Clearly we have some issues to be worked on. I want to bear in mind that we lost to the #1 and #2 teams in the country, and both have KenPom top-5ish defenses. We may have faced the two best big men in all of the country in a span of less than 24 hours. So in all of the emotion of losing two games, those are things to consider as we think back on these losses.

1. We have a rebounding problem. After dominating Syracuse on the glass, we got owned by Purdue (44-31, 17-10 ORebs) and Kansas (45-35). Tobe Awaka had 2 rebounds in 3 games. That’s a problem given it is his greatest strength and quality. His size is showing up as an issue against these bigger 5s, which isn’t surprising. He also hasn’t really improved his ability to defend without fouling. Aidoo rebounded better against KU, but for a guy his size, we need him to be more active on the glass.

2. Our offense just doesn’t make much of an effort to get buckets at the rim. It feels like every point we scored in these last two games was earned the hard way. Nothing seems to come easy for this team the way it does KU and Purdue, and not just Dickinson and Edey. KU had the floater game working well today. We just don’t get anything easy going at the rim. We also refuse to push the ball in transition, which only further emphasizes our inability to score in the paint. At one point vs KU, we had a 4 on 2 break and backed out for a 3-pt shot, which was one of the few that we hit. But we had other opportunities to push the ball and get to the rim or force a foul and just settled for backing out and getting into our offense, which was far too often dribble dribble pass for 20 seconds and shoot a 3.

3. Shot selection…we take a lot of bad, low percentage shots. 18-ft jumpers are bad shots, no matter who shoots them, but there is a reason no one guards Aidoo that far out. They want him taking that shot. Gainey passes up several 3s to take an 18-ft jumper. Bad shot! We just don’t seem to run a lot of set plays to get someone a look going to the basket. Our collection of guards is elite, but if they are not hitting shots from outside, we do not seem to adjust to finding better looks.

4. Second-chance points. This goes hand in hand with the rebounding problem, but we almost always only get one look on offense. Given the number of shots we take from outside, we should do a better job a grabbing long rebounds where our lack of size doesn’t necessarily come into play.

5. The Point Guard position is a problem. Zeigler is hurting his team on offense. 14 points, 8 assists, and 11 TOs in three games isn’t going to cut it. He’s still not 100%, so that is to be considered, but he can’t play as much as he did and not be more efficient. 4-22 shooting and 1-12 from 3 is damaging. Gainey was marginally better. 30 points, 5 assists, and 4 TOs on 9-32 shooting and 6-19 from 3. Mashack doesn’t provide much in the traditional sense as a PG, and his stats reflect that, so it isn’t perhaps fair to judge him on that. But he was definitely the most efficient of the three. 17 points, 3 assists, and 2 TOs on 6-14 shooting (0-1 from 3). None of them are doing a great job of being a facilitator of the offense, but I’m not real sure what the design of our offense is, right now.

These are the things that stand out as room for improvement. We were exposed by a couple good teams in some areas. Let’s just hope we can adjust and make changes that show up in March.

We need to rebound better to win these past two games. Obviously that is not an easy feat against 7’-4”. Kansas and Purdue didn’t have to hit their 3’s because they beat us inside.

2 biggest takeaways are rebounding is really an issue. Aidoo getting 2 RBs as starting center yesterday is killer. ZZ needs to be on minutes restriction in favor of Mashack. ZZ is such a liability right now that playing Mashack at least is huge advantage on D plus better driver and finisher at rim.

Really a brutal early schedule but will give a lot for CRB to learn about and fix in November instead of March.

Couple of points

1. agree completely. Maybe Tobe’s ankle was still bothering him but honestly he just looked timid to me on the glass, was moving fine

2. Agree

3. I agree about Gainey, he needs to stop doing that. But I don’t mind Aidoo taking those free throw line jumpers when we’re trying to draw an Edey or a Dickenson out of the paint to open things up. He wasn’t hitting them today but he’s shown the ability to before. I think it makes sense to try it

4. Yeah, they mostly got beaten to the loose balls, especially in the second half. They looked like the less conditioned team

5. Yeah. Double whammy of Ziegler being so rusty and Freddie being dinged up and not looking like a worldbeater early. I think one of them will turn things around so I’m not as worried about Pg

On the happy side I’m glad Santi rediscovered his shot

I recognize that we lost to two Top 3 teams. We likely won’t face a stretch as tough as that even in March unless we make the Elite 8. With that being said, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t pretty disappointed with how we showed in this tournament. I am not as upset with the losses as I am with how we played.

It is one thing to come out of that field 1-2. It is another thing to come out of that field feeling like we haven’t resolved any of the issues we faced last year. We Still. Can’t. Score. This is not just good defenses. This is us missing wide open shots and basically still having the problem of everyone disappearing except one person each night. Just like last year, when this team is bad on offense, we are BAD BAD.

Zakai is also doing us no favors. I’m surprised the number of minutes he is getting already. It’s more than I imagined, and while he looks fine defensively, his lack of scoring punch is almost neutralizing his defense.

I guess the silver lining is at least we have not peaked early. But man, I didn’t think I would come out of Maui as concerned about this team as I am. The path doesn’t get any easier. A true road game against a very good North Carolina team in just a week.

Agreed with a lot of these points. Think zz needs to realize he’s a role player on this team that needs to just play defense and take care of the ball, at least for now.

A lot of the 3’s we took were from way downtown. Idk if the nba line affected their perception or what, but a lot of 3’s and the spacing in general was 3-4 feet behind the nba line. Low percentage.

Edited to add rebounding is one of my biggest concerns coming out of this tourney. Think small ball is still our best bet, but have to put a bigger emphasis on it.

If I’m Barnes, I’m seeing what I have in Carr. Send a message to the team. When I’ve watched Carr play in limited minutes, he has a really nice looking shot and he we recruited him for his shot-making ability. You have to find some scoring somewhere.
Wouldn’t hate that actually. It’s November, there’s time to experiment. Heck we were gonna give a different freshman guard good minutes so why not. Plus I remember Carr having a few nice passes to cutters so hes not a black hole either, will keep the ball moving

Not disagreeing. Actually like the idea. I think we have seen the rotation and I will be surprised if Carr gets in it. Just don’t seem to have guys who can consistently make shots when you need them.

I’m just at the point where I don’t want to see another season go to waste because we can’t throw it in the ocean. I get that Barnes has a certain standard for defense, but your defense won’t matter if you can’t make shots. We sadly discussed this as nauseam last year, and again before people disagree with me I do understand we lost to two Top 3 teams, but it’s how we lost not that we lost. We had a lot of open looks that just won’t go down. If you’re going to be a guard heavy team with little to no post presence then you simply have to make shots.

The ZZ part can't be overstated how much he played and how bad of a liability he was. If he's remotely better things are potentially different. Hopefully rebounding portion is helped a smidge by experience of freshmen going forward. Phillips and Estrella as we saw against Purdue could be needed way more in the future.

No excuse for such poor shooting.
IMO playing 3 games in 3 days is about as taxing as it gets especially with the physicality and defensive intensity that we experienced in this tournament playing against 2 of the best bigs in the country.I wasn’t surprised we shot as bad as we did.
