Practice #6 Updates (4:00pm start)

Very good post and point.

The above is often underestimated as a factor when the team plays itself.

All summer or longer these same players have been going 7 on 7 against each other. At some point the DB's know them so well that the O really struggles to win unless they are just athletically superior. Familiarity will always favor the D.

And on the "going against air" or "atmospheric question" there is environmental familiarity as well.

If the team keeps playing with itself will the team go blind?

That's a good question but I can't imagine they (UT) would highlight the bad ones. Usually the good stuff is highlighted.

Or just what they think is the good stuff from the public portions of practice. Why would they want the media to see the private portions? I would assume they are private for a reason.

At this level, I'd say above 90%. It's not full speed, no pressure, the routes aren't disrupted.

Is that your professional opinion?

Also, Jones said "Anyway wideout that puts up one hand goes to the pit" and then about :30 later in the video (going to assume it's later in practice) Malone does exactly that.

Assuming Malone did that and Jones saw it, that could be part of why Malone seems to be dropping down the depth chart. Jones doesn't want walking around in his practices. Jones doesn't want half-@ssed efforts.

Honestly... good on him. I'd rather have a hard working 3* than an entitled and half-effort 5*.

Not saying that is what Malone is but the guy had a huge Spring and now he seems to be in something of a free-fall.

The highlights are for fans.

Jones, against what much of VN thinks, doesn't owe us a single thing.

The only thing Jones owes us is a quality product on-field. Showing us a fluff piece from practice is not part of that.

In fact, I can definitely see Jones going to the major parts of the media and saying "show the bad clips" so the fans lower their expectations a bit. Watch the 1v1 DB/WR drill between Hubbs and RTI. Hubbs showed almost 1/2 of the DBs getting burned. RTI showed more of the drill and a bulk of the DBs did their job.

Why the disparity? Jones doesn't want the team nor the fanbase to think this team is a world-burner. Coaching is just as much a mind-game as it is actual coaching/recruiting.

Bad mechanics not being corrected by coaching

I really wonder who has the eye for this on the coaching staff. Dreamy X made adjustments that helped Crompton to thrive his senior year. Not sure we have anyone now that can give that kind of attention.

To me, there are just too many bad throws. Espescially the touch passes to the corner of the endzone. By this time, they should be able to make that throw with their eyes closed. It should be like BB players making free throws. Put it in the spot and let the receiver make the catch.

You ever play poker?

A lot but who are the opponents in this poker game? There isn't one team on our schedule that changed their gameplan for UT based on that video. It's just a video of drills that every team in the country runs.

I chalked it up to fatigue and lack of focus. It happens a week into camp with August heat. Not a big deal.

A little off-topic but I was listening to a sports show in Tampa last week and this topic (and pre-season camp injuries) came up. The host was talking about how many players don't train in the off-season with pads, cleats, etc. They train in shorts and running shoes and when they 1st put on the pads and cleats their bodies aren't ready. It was very interesting and made sense.

So maybe the team is just adjusting.

Are you serious? If you and I were standing there playing catch I would set the bar at above 90%.

I saw the Malone play you reference. I was wondering as well if Jones would call him out. However, the pass was a bit high.

We have to win the first game. If we lose that one, no bowl game. No point showing your hand if you don't have to. (This is how my Pollyanna mind works. I can't help it.)

Everyone was wondering 4 years ago why Spurrier did not offer SC native and Gatorade POY Worley. Now we know.

UT will win the 1st game. It may not be to everyone's "standard" but UT will win.

It's only August 8th. If the same mistakes are happening on August 28th, I'd be a little more concerned.

Do you remember SC's QB play pre Garcia? It was worse than what we presently face.

I think secretly everyone wants Bray back or at least the highlight reel version of him. However comfortable we might be envisioning a guy that can thread a needle or throw it on a rope truth is we had that and it didn't win us chit. We can have average QB play and be a good team. Hell KY and UF managed to beat us with bad QB play. This team will need to step up across the board and help each other out.

The defense should be ahead of the offense at this point. It was always that way during the heydays - every year we were worried about how bad the offense looked because the D was dominating in practice. However, the O would turn out pretty good once the playbook opened up and the season got underway against new competition.

I think Worley will be fine to start the season and there's no reason ( barring another injury) to think that the progression we witnessed from him last year won't continue.

I look forward to revisiting this thread once the season gets started.

Ainge said this morning the Malone "bad attitude" thing is getting blown way out of proportion. Basically that his personality is just a bit laxed and he will be fine. Ainge said he's very similar to Justin Hunter in this and it's not necessarily a bad thing.
