Practice #8 - Morning Edition

Listen here you silly silly goose. If Dobbs was battling for #2 with someone else, that means there is a number one. Why haven't you named that starter yet coach? The other coach, Butch Jones, is apparently a silly silly too for believing the competition is still wide open. I'm sure that you will enlighten him.

You realize there are several reasons for not naming a starting QB right?

I believe we will see Worley and Peterman on the field during the course of the season. I also think Dobbs will be in for a redshirt season. Granted, this opinion is based only on the very limited videos we've seen.

Why is everyone so worked up? I'm sure CBJ knows who the starter is based on talent alone, but maybe he's trying to get more out of someone before naming them the starter? Like becoming more vocal or asserting themselves in certain situations. Some leadership qualities can be learned/developed.

I'm sure we will hear something soon. We have to remember these coaches are developing young men as well as football players.

I had no idea we had so many college football analysts on VN. CBJ should fire his staff and just hire all of these experts. They obviously know what's going on in the players' minds better than the coaches that talk to them every day.

All kidding aside, I think everyone should just take a deep breath and relax. We aren't as bad off as everyone is making it seem, but we also won't win a NC this year. I trust that the coaching staff and the players are both working extremely hard to get better every day.

C-dub you know better than that... This is VolNation!

isn't it always entertaining to read comments about not agreeing with coaching decisions? The coaches know these young men's talents better than anyone, yet VN knows how to use the talents best

Dobbs ran great last year. We still lost to Vandy. Give me the best passer.

The best passer in games has been Dobbs, the best manager is Worley, the best passer in practice the past few days is Peterman. See the problem?

As for Vandy.... We lost to Vandy because the TD Dobbs ran in was called back because of Pig's block/whiff in the back - much like a lot of TDs he threw and/or ran in his time as starter (he actually had multiple TDs before his 'first' ever arrived). Dobbs, unfortunately, had very little help and was hindered a great deal by our lack of depth and the grind of the season that effected many players that were no where near as fresh as they were early on. The rest of our guys were so mentally and physically fatigued, dinged up and injured, by that point in the season that mistakes that weren't being made in the first half of the season absolutely killed scoring drives.

Our oline couldn't even push for a yard against Vandy they were so beat up physically and mentally. Tiny's false starts at Mizzou, other stupid penalties at Mizzou by several players that sent us backward when we were in position to score or had 'scored', that block in the back by Pig against Vandy all those things cost us drives and scores and yes, effected Dobbs' stats big time. Dobbs actually set both passing and rushing records for UT QBs during the Mizzou game yet no one realizes this because scores and drives were killed by penalties and our D was scored on more times than the village bicycle.

In the latter part of the season Josh Smith was dropping balls left and right. North was out at Vandy. The line was a mess and unable to push for short yardage.

And on and on but the real killer was that the lack of depth caught up to us. We didn't know: Tiny's knees were so shredded the NFL wouldn't draft him despite his enormous talent, Josh Smith was playing with a torn miniscus in his knee and a hand injury, Josh Dobbs was playing with both a leg and hand injury (between that and North not being available the coaches chose not to pass much and we should've won that game even with the choice to rely on the run), the line as a whole was injured and exhausted and yet had it not been for Pig's block that caused Dobbs' TD to be called back, the lack of push by the line, and several bad calls that royally screwed UT we would have - take your pick as only changing one of those things equals a win.

If you want someone to blame for the latter half of the season: his name is Derek Dooley. That team worked its behind off for CBJ but we couldn't withstand the grind of that insane schedule and the physical and mental toll it took on our players without depth. The talent levels and insane attrition that team 117 had to deal with as a result of Dooley's incompetence had and is still having an enormous impact. The situation on Offense left every single one of our QBs with no one with any experience to throw to. They struggled in a new system but they struggled even more for not having a safety valve at TE and Slot or ANY veteran WRs/TEs on that team at all.

While I'm happy that folks have FINALLY started to figure some of this out when it comes to Worley and Peterman's struggles last year, I'm absolutely amazed that the true frosh who wasn't even an EE and had to face better teams, teams that had played all season together and had gelled while he hadn't taken a snap and face those opponents with a team that was mentally and physically so beat down they could've occupied their own wing at Walter Reed has become the scape goat for a bad season.

As to the QB competition... there's a lot more doom and gloom around here than the tapes warrant. We saw all 3 improve in the spring, all three take steps in the summer, and we've seen all three do some good things and bad things early on in camp but all three have been way above where they were last year. The negativity is grossly out of proportion to what's actually on those tapes.

You guys need to keep in mind that this is a message board and there is no prerequisite for your name to be Butch Jones before posting privileges are granted.

He thinks Dobbs is battling for #2 because like many others he thinks Worley is #1, as many do.
You're right there is no prerequisite to be CBJ before you post. However, is there a prerequisite to have a degree in parapsychology before you claim to know what he is thinking.

Of course you failed to mention that Vandy was playing their scrubs in the secondary. Dobbs completed more passes to the other team than anyone. Yes, he was thrown in the fire, was hurt, had few weapons, but your crowning him the best passer is laughable.

Folks would feel much better if they would focus on the run game IMO.

Wolf looks just like Witten in this pic. I sure hope he plays like him.

Why because he is white? You racist. IMHOJMO

If Peterman steps foot on the field as the starting or #2 quarterback of the Vols we are in horrible shape. Everyone wants to dog Dobbs in preference of Peterman but at least when he played we gained positive yards. Peterman has done nothing to prove he deserves all this hype everyone keeps trying to place upon him. I personally have zero trust in him and I hope I'm wrong.

I've been reading these at work all day and could not respond but this one is definitely the winner. Dobbs set records for passing and running for a freshman at Mizzou game if not for the penalties that called all his gains back. I thought I watched all the games but I have to admit I missed all the TD's he ran in that were called back.

You better be prepared for us to be in horrible shape then.

Why name him the starter now?
I haven't said they should... only that it might let them relax if they did. They don't need to name a starter for my part. That's up to the guy with his career on the line... and he apparently thinks the best choice is to hold off.

Worley is leading. That seems pretty clear. Peterman seems to have overtaken Dobbs for #2. Beyond that... who really knows?

If you name Worley the starter now then you run the risk of stalling progression for the other 2.
Really? Players quit trying to improve after a starter is named? You might want to rethink that.

This staff has serious problems at QB, in fact I'm willing to bet all 3 will start a game before the season is said and done. This season will mirror 2008 to a T with the exception noone will be fired. Which is why people need to calm down a little bit on these 7 and 8 win predictions.

The staff has a better situation at QB than folks like you believe. They have three good players with at a minimum 2 years of college development under their belts. At some point, coaches have to earn their pay and get players ready to go... that appears to be what Jones is trying to do.
