George and Murphy — who are suddenly much more important to a Tennessee team that just lost leading receiver Jauan Jennings for an indefinite period of time with a wrist injury — got plenty of attention from their head coach Wednesday, and that’s probably going to be the case for a while. This team needs the 6-foot-6 George and the quick Murphy to contribute much more for the foreseeable future.
Starting defensive tackle Kendal Vickers didn't finish Monday night's game after walking off the field gingerly with a pair of trainers during the second half, but he was still in uniform and participating in the postgame celebrations.
And on Wednesday he was going through drills during the early parts of practice.
As expected, redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Drew Richmond returned to the practice field following his suspension for Tennessee’s season opener Monday night, and he worked at his usual left-tackle position during offensive-line drills.
p.brownSophomore wide receiver Marquez Callaway again received plenty of work on punt returns coming off his two-touchdown game Monday night, likely indicating that his potentially expanded role on offense won’t come at the expense of his punt-return duties.
Injured wideout Josh Smith (shoulder) and Kendal Vickers (leg) were both at practice. Smith was in a green, non-contact jersey, while Vickers was not. Also in green Wednesday: DT Eric Crosby and a few other scout team guys.
j. simonton* During kickoff return work, Ty Chandler, Micah Abernathy, Emmanuel Mosley, Nigel Warrior and Shawn Shamburger rotated reps.
* With the OL at full-strength, Drew Richmond returned as the first-team LT, with Brett Kendrick now at RT. The interior stayed the same from Monday. Walt Wells was very complimentary of Venzell Boulware during combo-blocking drills.
* The OL spent a lengthy period working on blitz pickup against the scout team.
r. lewisBoth quarterbacks looked crisp today and both appeared to be getting coached hard by Mike Canales with some kind of immediate feedback--whether positive or negative--after almost every rep.
Looked like both guys were really accurate and as far as reps Dormady and Guarantano took I counted only one ball on the ground today in the two periods of work we saw and that was a clear receiver drop.
Jack Jones slid over to right tackle during today’s practice. Ryan Johnson was getting work at guard alongside Coleman Thomas, Venzell Boulware and Richmond.
Butch Jones said today that he needs more individuals to step up on the defensive line. One of those guys is Alexis Johnson, who he was all over today.
w bolingDuring routes vs. air, George was under a watchful eye from both Jones and Kevin Beard. Beard was physical in coverage, pushing the backs of the receivers as the ball came their way, trying to throw them off.
Also of note — Josh Smith was back on the practice field. The senior wide receiver, who is considered “questionable” to play this weekend, was wearing a green non-contact jersey.
