Prayers for So and So

Ok. Let's say you have a sick child, you pray, but he died anyway. Did God not listen?

God hears all prayers of the righteous (Prov 15:29).

I've never been a parent, so I've never lost a child. I know this will sound more callous than intended, but it's a misnomer that we think a child is/should be exempt from death because they are "innocent". That's in direct contradiction with what the Bible says in Rom 3:23 that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

I also believe there are things we aren't able to understand and will never understand. I think that's one thing about God that frustrates most people. In our own pride/arrogance/narcissism we can't comprehend that there are things that are beyond the scope of our comprehension.

I would pray for your mom not to be in pain. And that you and your family would find some comfort and peace in a difficult situation.

I respect this position, too.

I guess I'm curious about the people who say "prayer really does work" after they prayed for an averted tragedy and liked the result. Nobody here really seems to believe that way.

The hardest prayer to pray is that God's will be done. We are a people of control and that basically relinquishes all control to a God we believe in thru faith without seeing

I usually bought Wasatch. I like the Polygamy Porter. The Devastator is good if ya need high octane. My favorite above the Wasatch beers was Black Butte. It's out of Oregon.

Honest question...if praying for someone actually does any good, why wouldn't believers be praying for everyone in the world all the time? Wouldn't that fix the world's problems?

This probably comes across as antagonistic, but this is the way I think through everything, internally. Just my nature.

You are going to get blasted...

I've always figured a non-religious persons' hoping (for good in a bad situation) was roughly equivalent to the religious prayer.

Interactions with some religious people seem to support this assertion while interactions with other religious people infer that is not the case (they have a special link to a power who will turn that hope into action).

At its essence, for me anyway, prayer is not about sending a request to a cosmic vending machine in the sky. It isn't a list of wants or demands.

Rather it is asking that God's will be done AND THEN thereafter that all affected parties have peace, comfort and understanding with whatever God's will is.

For some things, there is no reasonable explanation that will make sense to a human's mind. We can't understand the larger picture. So, in those moments, I ask God to help me get through it as best I can.

I have a pet peeve when I hear someone who is facing a tough decision in life and they say they prayed and prayed until God pointed them in the right direction.

Like a college athlete who is deciding whether or not to go pro early.

99% of the time God seems to tell them the answer they wanted to hear to begin with. The one that benefits them most.

That is a very good question. I like to look at the story of Joseph (If you don't believe in Scripture, then this is irrelevant). Joseph was plotted to be killed, sold into slavery, but through a chain of events was placed in the ultimate position to have mercy on his own family. The point is that we look at life with our face stuck on one page in the book of life. Hindsight allows us to see the whole picture.
