Targeted tariffs do nothing of the sort. But hey you are the genius on here, so explain how they would. There are two right wing groups here on VN:
1) people incapable of understanding that tariffs cause long run inflation
2) people that finally understand it but aren't interested in helping the slow people
Edit: in fairness, there are probably a few who always understood but barely seem to care, for some reason.
Every nation has tariffs..when are people going to get that their thick skulls?Targeted tariffs do nothing of the sort. But hey you are the genius on here, so explain how they would.
Lemme guess. You don't have time to stoop to my level to explain it. In other words, you are spewing more of your usual ********.

I will concede that it will cause inflation on the targeted item. If we add a 100% tariff to trucks made in Mexico, that doesn't change the price of the trucks made in America or elsewhere for that matter. I for one don't care about whether or not it causes cheap Chinese **** to inflate. What I care about is forcing AAPL and other companies to move their sweatshops to other countries, and that is the ultimate goal. One bite at a time. It took a long time for us to get on our knees to the Chinese. It will take awhile to get off of them. Can you explain why targeted tariffs do not cause inflation?
I can explain it. I doubt you are willing to learn anything, but I'll still do it.
Anytime you increase production cost, somebody has to eat that. The party who eats it depends on something called price elasticity. It's kind of a confusing concept to explain in detail, but just look at it like this...if the seller has more market power, then the buyer eats the cost. If the buyer has more power, the seller eats the cost. Those are polar examples to illustrate the point, but usually what happens is both parties share the burden of the cost increase.
So say I make widget X for $25 and sell it to you for $50 and the government imposes a tariff of $10, I will try to pass that cost along to you. If you won't buy it for $60 and I won't sell it for $50, then we're done doing business altogether. What usually ends up happening is that I eat $5 of the $10 and sell it to you for $55, and thus you are experiencing inflation and carrying part of the burden of the tariffs.
Whether or not there is inflation has nothing to do with whether or not the tariff is "targeted." It causes inflation if it is an inelastic good. In some cases we might stumble onto a tariff of an elastic good where prices don't increase but our tax revenue does if the supplier continues to supply. But since I have never heard Trump or any of his zealots even say the words "elasticity" and "inelasticity" I'm pretty confident they're not even thinking about this ****.

Dear God….NBC Taps Left-Wing journalist Yamiche Alcindor to Cover Trump in return to White House press corps
Alcindor served as PBS' White House correspondent during the first Trump administration
Left-leaning journalist Yamiche Alcindor announced Monday that she will be returning to the White House to cover the incoming Trump administration for NBC News after an extended hiatus.
Alcindor was accused of glaring liberal bias as a PBS White House correspondent and New York Times reporter during President-elect Donald Trump's first term, where she regularly sparred with the president in contentious public exchanges.
